Accounting Co-op Student

Second Street Fund Inc. and related entities own and manage a rental property portfolio consisting of over forty residential multi-family, commercial and retail projects. The properties are located in Alberta, BC, Northwest Territories, Utah, and California. The company also invests in non-real estate endeavors.
This is a junior level accounting position with an administrative component. This position reports to the Director of Financial Reporting and provides administrative and accounting support to both corporate and operational finance staff.
**DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES**
- Provide administrative and accounting support to the corporate and operational finance teams.
- Typing a variety of material including but not limited to correspondence from rough draft and verbal direction, financial and statistical reports, spreadsheets, records management (including server files), filing, and other correspondence.
- Data entry for various continuity schedules.
- Assistance with preparation of month end and year end files, financial statements and tax returns, as assigned.
- Electronic and paper filing of corporate and personal tax returns.
- Assistance with preparation of reports required by Statistics Canada.
- Participate in and document findings of walkthroughs of operational and corporate business processes.
- Maintain the filing, storage and archives of corporate finance department records, both physically and electronically.
- Perform variance analyses and account reconciliation.
- Other projects and activities as required.
**KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES**:
- Working knowledge of accounting principles
- Understanding of corporate structure and relationships between various companies and individuals.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees and members of the general public.
- Thorough knowledge of office methods and procedures and use of standard office equipment.
- Professional presentation, positive attitude, and excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to work under tight timelines and to balance multiple and varied projects at one time.
- Ability to assemble and organize information and research material as required.
- Complete assigned tasks in an efficient and effective manner.
- Ability to act with independence and judgment with mínimal supervision.
- Ability to display a mature comprehension of the needs of the corporate finance department in terms of written and verbal communication when dealing with others.
- Proficient in all Microsoft Office programs; Word and Excel are critical; basic computer database management skills are also required.
**EDUCATION, TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE**:
Along with your High School Diploma (or equivalent), you will be pursuing a degree or diploma in an Accounting, Finance, or Business program. Prior experience working in an office or in roles with general administration duties will be considered an asset.
