**JOB TITLE: Shellfish Monitoring Coordinator**
**Reports to: Marine Manager**
**Salary Scale: $25-30**
**Department: Local Services**
**Deadline: Ongoing**

**SUMMARY**:
The Shellfish Monitoring Coordinator will be responsible for shellfish monitoring activities, community outreach related to shellfish harvesting, and working with external partners to advance shellfish restoration and monitoring. The Shellfish Monitoring Coordinator will assist the Songhees Marine Team with other marine monitoring, restoration, and community outreach work as needed. This position goes to March 31, 2025, possibility of extension funding dependent.

**KEY DUTIES**:

- Implementation of the shellfish monitoring program developed using technical expertise in 2023-2024.
- Routine monitoring and data collection for shellfish abundance.
- Routine reporting on data and lab results.
- Meeting with government agencies and organizations to advocate for improved water quality in priority shellfish harvesting locations.
- With support of the marine manager, hosting meetings/workshops for community outreach and involvement in shellfish restoration and monitoring efforts.
- Reviewing phytoplankton samples under microscope.
- Water quality testing.
- Equipment procurement for shellfish-based work.
- Mix of office and field work.

**REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES**:
*Any of the certificates stated below are considered assets
- Knowledge of microscope use.
- Knowledge and understanding of local marine biology, particularly of local clam species.
- Knowledge of impacts facing shellfish and shellfish closures through DFO; knowledge of the ecological principles related to shellfish habitats and populations.
- Experience with field monitoring methods, including field data collection and lab analysis.
- Familiarity with environmental monitoring equipment such as water quality testing.
- Understanding of local federal regulations governing shellfish harvesting and environmental protection.
- Knowledge of health and safety standards related to shellfish consumption.
- Competencies in data entry and management.
- Ability to prepare technical reports, monitoring plans, and documentation.
- Strong written communication skills to convey scientific findings to various stakeholders, including Songhees community.
- Ability to conduct field work in various weather conditions.
- Skills in scheduling, resource allocation, and communication.
- Experience working with Indigenous groups.

**REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE**:

- Degree in biology, environmental studies, geography, or related field.
- Valid BC Driver’s license

**WORK CONDITIONS**:

- Sitting, standing, walking, climbing, squatting/kneeling, reaching, grasping, pushing/pulling, twisting/bending, lifting/carrying up to 50 lbs.
- Spending time outdoors in various weather conditions.
- Spending time on boats occasionally.
