Overview

The Community Worker - One Roof program is responsible for providing experiential education in order to help youth develop new skills to gain confidence and self
- esteem. The food literacy program will help youth develop their skills for independent living, healthy eating, and potential employment opportunities in the food industry.

DESCRIPTION

The Community Worker - One Roof is responsible for the following tasks:

- Create an inviting experience for the youth accessing drop-in;
- Support the drop-in program and admin assistant in day-to-day operations of the drop-in space;
- Identify and connect youth in need to service;
- Address crisis situations in the drop-in as needed;
- Promoting safety and security at the location at all times, taking action as required
- Assessing and providing solutions to ongoing food insecurity needs and gaps in service delivery of high
- risk and vulnerable youth;
- Maintain an updated data inventory of food resources;
- Produce regular communications to internal and external audiences on the types of food programs being provided;
- Work with volunteer groups to coordinate the delivery of food and nutrition services;
- Provide information sessions on how to prepare and consume gut healthy meals and snacks;
- Developing and administering programs aimed at increasing client’s food literacy and self efficacy in the kitchen;
- Ensuring the kitchen and dining area are cleaned and sanitized in an appropriate fashion as per One Roof and Government of Ontario Policies;
- Creating a weekly meal plan that can be followed;
- Purchasing or acquiring the groceries necessary to provide gut healthy meal options and snacks on a budget;
- Maintain data on number of persons in attendance and activities
- Completing other duties as assigned by One Roof Program Supervisor or Manager.

Required skills and Knowledge
- Knowledge of the operating standards for the One Roof Program and the program’s expected client outcomes.
- Knowledge and experience developing and implementing projects aimed at increasing food literacy amongst transitional aged youth.
- Knowledge of and ability to teach youth about food allergies and safe food handling practices.
- Experience developing and administering programming aimed at increasing food literacy.
- Knowledge of resources in the community for youth and families who are experiencing complex needs, skilled at brokering services for client appropriate to the responsibilities of the job.
- Knowledge of issues affecting transitional aged youth.
- Effective interpersonal skills and the ability to set and maintain boundaries.
- Ability to integrate harm reduction approaches as appropriate in daily interactions with clients.
- Ability to use assertive engagement techniques as appropriate in interactions with the client.
- Ability to identify and assess risk and implement strategies which minimize risk to self, the client, and others.
- Knowledge of and adherence to privacy legislation and policies within the organization related to confidentiality of client information.
- Strong problem solving, conflict resolution, and mediation skills within a solution-focused framework.
- Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
- The ability to negotiate and mediate difficult situations and produce positive results.
- Ability to function as a participating member of the team and understand the work of the team as part of a broader system to help reduce youth crime in the city of Kingston.
- Ability to coach on the principles and interventions required in the One Roof program.
- Ability to collaborate with Indigenous Elder and other stakeholders to provide culturally appropriate meals to participants;
Qualifications and Requirements
- university degree or community college diploma in a related discipline
- minimum three years work experience in human services
- possess a valid Driver’s License and have access to a reliable vehicle, with appropriate insurance
- Ontario Government approved Food Handling Certificate
- Non-violent Crisis Intervention Training or related training
- First Aid and CPR
- CPIC - vulnerable sector required prior to employment

Hours of Work
- 35 hours per week
- variable shifts Monday - Friday, 8: 30 a.m. - 7:00 p.m.
