**Summary**

The Business Agent is a lead staff position at CUPE 2950, an autonomous union representing post-secondary clerical, library and theatre workers. This position is responsible for all aspects of the CUPE 2950's mandate to provide high levels of advocacy, collective bargaining, operational effectiveness, strategic planning, education and engagement, and leadership in issue-based campaigns to union members.

**Job Summary**

The Canadian Union of Public Employees Local 2950 represents approximately 1,500 clerical, library and theatre workers in the public sector. We are an autonomous post-secondary education sector local based within a provincial and national union. The Business Agent is a lead staff position responsible for all aspects of the Local’s mandate to provide high levels of advocacy, collective bargaining, operational effectiveness, strategic planning, education and engagement, and leadership in issue-based campaigns and political programs to union members.

**Skills and Knowledge**:

- Experience in labour relations and collective bargaining
- Effective as a grievance and third-party advocate
- Skilled in internal organizing and local building using member engagement methods
- Able to design and deliver member, steward and leadership education
- Ability to interpret applicable legislation and regulations
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Experience with post-secondary education within a large complex organization is an asset

**Reporting Relationships**

A collaborative approach is required for most matters, but direction and supervision are received from the Local president or designate, and provided to the administrative and other staff. The relationship with assigned CUPE National staff is collegial, with the opportunity to seek advice and problem-solve.

**Work Performed**
- Responds to or assists with incoming calls from various sources and re-directs as appropriate.
- Composes correspondence, reports, briefs, presentations and other documents.
- Assists committee members in performing their duties and ensures that Local committees are fulfilling their mandate
- Liaises between the University, Local Executive and members
- Liaises with other CUPE Locals and unions on matters of mutual concern.
- Provides advice and interpretation of the Collective Agreement
- Keeps notes at all union/management meetings for the Local records
- Attends committee, membership and other meetings
- Reports on activities to the Executive Committee and general membership
- Reviews job postings and assists with reclassification, re-evaluations and bargaining unit jurisdiction
- Prepares and presents grievances at all steps of the Grievance Procedure and arbitrations. Ensures all grievances are effectively managed in accordance with the Collective Agreement
- Represents the Local in matters regarding BC Labour Code matters such as organizing new members, exclusions from the bargaining unit, and labour disputes.
- Visits union members on the job site in order to investigate complaints, promote the interests of the Local or represent members
- Prepares and presents briefs to the employer and assists the CUPE National Staff Representative in same
- Prepares research material for negotiations, and third-party hearings or appeals. Represents CUPE 2950 or assists the CUPE National Staff Representative in presentations.
- Assists in organizing and facilitating shop steward, leadership and other training seminars.
- Leads the preparation for and conduct of collective bargaining.
- Performs other related duties.

**Terms and Working Conditions**:
**Location**:CUPE Local 2950 office at the University of British Columbia's Vancouver Campus. May include meetings at locations where CUPE Local 2950 members work. Some remote work by mutual agreement.

**Hours**:Variable, based on a core 35-hour work week, with additional hours as needed. (No overtime)

This is a bargaining unit role with the Union Worker’s Union.

**Salary**: $6,092.00-$7,500.00 per month
