**POSITION OVERVIEW**
The City of Maple Ridge is one of the fastest-growing cities in Metro Vancouver, with City staff serving a population of around 92,000 people. The Corporate Planning and Consultation Department plays an integral role in leading climate action in Maple Ridge. The city is on a low-carbon resiliency pathway towards local climate action and resiliency. In this role, you will work with and be mentored by the Maple Ridge Climate Action and Resiliency Advisor, who serves as a strategic advisor across the organization in climate action, resiliency, and sustainability practices, collaborating with a wide variety of internal and external stakeholders.

**INTERNSHIP ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS**
- Eligible students must be enrolled - or accepted for enrolment - in a full-time undergraduate or graduate program in a climate-related field at one of the four PICS partner institutions: UVIC, UBC, SFU or UNBC.
- Students must either be returning to complete their degree programs following the internship or have completed their programs the semester prior to the start of the internship.
- Valid BC Class 5 Driver’s license.

**KEYS TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES**
- Conducting background research on resiliency and decarbonization methods that can be applied at the home level (owned and rental).
- Analyzing factors such as cost range, ease of taking action and effectiveness of actions (e.g. amount carbon reduced, lower flood or drainage risks, lower fire risk) at home level with considerations of owned vs rental.
- Develop a suite of actions that can be customized/filtered for building type, building ownership (owner vs rental), landscape type with identification of effort, costs, emissions reduced, resiliency measures.
- Conduct research and assess capacity in the community to undertake program.
- Development of an Information Guide and checklist (paper and online) that incorporates actions that can be taken at the home level to increase climate resiliency efforts.
- Analysis and identification of supports to develop the program further.

**THE IDEAL CANDIDATE WILL HAVE**
- Problem-solving skills supported by the ability to research, analyze, and interpret complex information.
- Ability to evaluate and measure a diversified climate action and resiliency project.
- Familiarity with carbon decarbonization and resiliency actions at the community/home level.
- Strong communications and writing skills to influence understanding and behaviour change.
- Understanding of climate risks with focus on local impacts and climate equity.
- Understanding of building and landscape design, ownership, operations and maintenance with a climate/energy/resiliency/sustainability focus.
- Strong time-management and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to prepare and present reports of a political, sensitive, and operational nature.
