**The Role**Responsibilities**
- 1. Operational Support, Administration, and Maintenance
- a. Installs, configures, and maintains enterprise physical and virtual server environments, complex wired and wireless network architectures, on-premises and remote data center infrastructure components and wide area network (WAN) connections.
- b. Administers and integrates various cloud services in multiple cloud environments.
- c. Investigates and handles the most difficult and advanced escalated problems using expert level troubleshooting and analysis, liaising with internal and external teams.
- d. Plans capacity and optimizes infrastructure resources including power, CPU, memory, disk, and network to meet current and future demand.
- e. Ensures system security and resiliency; including server hardening, upgrades, security patches, virus scanning and malware protection, backup and recovery.
- f. Builds and maintains systems that automate user account administration.
- g. Monitors, identifies and remediates issues related to the performance, availability, and security of systems; ensures logging and log auditing.
- h. Creates and maintains technical documentation.
- i. Translates technical information to individuals of both technical and non-technical backgrounds.
- j. Applies extreme attention to detail to work and remains calm under pressure, as mistakes may result in college-wide outage and/or data loss.
- 2. Project Delivery
- a. Acts as in-house technical consultant, working closely with the manager, external vendors, to gather requirements, cost, evaluate options, and provide recommendations considering technical trends, latest developments, security, performance, college operations, and internal environment.
- b. Designs and implements networks and systems for optimal performance, cost, etc.
- c. Provides leadership to technology projects and related teams.
- d. Completes infrastructure project deliverables to meet timelines and requirements.
- e. Monitors and reports on the status of infrastructure deliverables, identifying obstacles, delays, work arounds and alternatives.
- f. Works with contractors and electricians around power, cooling, cabling requirements in wiring closets and Data Centres.
- g. Builds proof of concepts, pilots, sandbox, development environments.
- h. Analyzes processes, performs scripting and programming in computer languages for automation and orchestration projects as required.
- i. Creates project and test plans for infrastructure components.
- 3. Systems Integrations
- a. Integrates various on premise, multi-cloud technical, traditional and hyper-converged components that may have completely different architectures, computer languages and protocols.
- b. Applies advanced understanding of new and existing disparate college systems, how they communicate, interconnect and interact in order to create a coordinated solution that achieves the business objective.
- 4. Staying Current, Knowledge Sharing, Technical Guidance and Mentoring
- a. Pro-actively pursues knowledge and learns new technologies that may contribute to College Strategic Directions by taking training, attending conferences, workshops, presentations, and membership in associations and committees.
- b. Provides guidance and mentors by sharing knowledge with other teams where technology is changing at hyper-speeds.
- 5. Disaster Recovery and Business Continuity
- a. Designs and maintains the Infrastructure components of enterprise Disaster Recovery (DR) as it relates to Douglas College Business Continuity Plan (BC).
- b. Designs systems to meet recovery point objectives (RPO) and recovery time objectives (RTO).
- c. Configures and maintains disaster recovery and backup data repositories, snapshots, replication of College data from campus to campus.
- d. Monitors enterprise Uninteruptable Power Supply (UPS) systems and backup generators including load, capacity, power requirements, liases with external services providers to facilitate preventative maintenance.
- 6. Performs other related duties, such as:
- a. assists in the planning and development of improved service;
- b. interfaces with other computer technicians and client support personnel regarding issues related to web infrastructure and production operating systems.
