Our team is looking for an experienced Research Technician to work on blood specimen collection studies for the testing of point of care technology. Point of care tests are laboratory tests performed at or near the patient bedside to facilitate faster time to result for clinical decision making. Working closely as a member of the clinical research team, the Research Technician will be responsible for performing blood procurement procedures (i.e., blood collection) for patients/members of the public that consent to participate in the clinical research study; as well as for lab-based collection, identification and handling of clinical samples. The Research Technician will also be responsible for booking blood collection procedures, data entry, and liaising with the R&D lab.

**Laboratory Procedures**:

- Collect and label specimens as per the research protocol. Ensures proper patient identification and documents accurate specimen collection information.
- Ensures that correct equipment is used for venipuncture/lab procedures and that specimens are appropriately preserved as per procedures.
- Properly package each specimen and ensure that every specimen is delivered to the research laboratory on time.

**Clerical/Communication**:

- Explains to patient the protocols for specimen procedure and collection.
- Maintains study database and study files.
- Communicates directly with other members of the clinical research team in carrying out the requirements of study protocols.

**Quality Assurance**:

- Reports non-conformances to the research team in a timely manner.
- Records workstation-cleaning activities on log sheet.
- Monitors inventory and removes expired items.

**Safety**:

- Performs work in accordance with the provisions of the Occupational Health and Safety Act and Regulations and all Ottawa Hospital Corporate/Departmental Policies and Procedures related to Occupational Health & Safety.
- Performs work using safe phlebotomy practice using the appropriate Personal Protective Equipment and in accordance with Routine Practices.
- Attends safety in-service training e.g., WHMIS, fire safety.

**Basic Requirements (Education/Experience)**:

- College diploma/BSc in a health-related field
- 1-5 years of experience in a research environment
- Graduated from medical technician program for phlebotomy (MLAT)
- WHMIS, safety legislation
- Knowledge of infection control and safe work practices
- Knowledge of blood procurement procedures
- Superior organizational and communication skills
- Proficiency in speaking and comprehending both English and French
- Strong computer skills including MS Word, Outlook, and Excel
- Excellent attention to detail to ensure accuracy of data and protocol requirements

**Contract Details**:
This is a part-time position with an end date of May 31, 2024.

**Salary**: Min: $21.278/hr. - Max: $30.747/hr.
