Job Summary

Under general supervision, assists with the day-to-day running of the Centre for Infant Cognition. Assists in running experiments by recruiting and scheduling participants, entering and checking data, and collecting and summarizing material for report preparation. These duties may be performed on UBC s campus in the Kenny Building as well as in area schools, day-cares and museums.

Organizational Status
Reports to the Lab Director. Works closely with graduate and undergraduate students who participate actively as research assistants and volunteers.

Work Performed

Assist with participant outreach, communications, scheduling, and lab maintenance of busy infant development lab specializing in social and moral cognition.

Assist with behavioural research for families actively participating in a longitudinal project that tracks the social and moral development of infants from birth to 3 years old; responsibilities include the upkeep of spreadsheets, online software, and physical filing of data.

Assist PI, staff, and graduate students with hiring, training, and supervising a team of ~45 undergraduate research assistant volunteers/award holders.

Performs other related duties.

Consequence of Error/Judgement

Much of the work is performed according to clear procedures, and monitored; however, some individual initiative is required. Errors may result in loss of data, participants or reputation, the slowing down of productivity in the laboratory, or ethics approval being delayed.

Supervision Received
The employee works under general supervision, receiving instruction when new duties are assigned and when unusual problems arise. Tasks will be assigned by the Lab Directors.

Supervision Given
The employee may need to explain routine tasks to undergraduate research assistant or volunteers.

Minimum Qualifications

High school graduation and a minimum one year of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Preferred Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in Psychology preferred. Experience involving experimental research in developmental psychology, preferably in a research laboratory setting with a focus on infants and young children, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Effective organizational skills. Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing. Ability to deal with a diversity of people in a calm, courteous, and effective manner. Ability to maintain accuracy and attention to detail. Ability to work effectively independently and in a team environment. Ability to effectively manage multiple tasks and priorities. Ability to prioritize and work effectively under pressure to meet deadlines. Ability to respect confidentiality and securely manage sensitive information. Familiarity with technology (e.g., iPad, Mac systems) will be preferred.
