**Major Responsibilities**:
Reporting to the Supervisor, Media Relations, the Media Relations Advisor is responsible for the coordination of public health media relations, issues management and crisis communications; liasing with staff from across the division to coordinate day-to-day media relations; providing strategic media advice and support to all levels of public health staff; and developing and identifying proactive media opportunities to communicate information about Toronto Public Health programs and services
- Coordinating with the Office of the Medical Officer of Health, the Senior Management Team, managers and staff from all directorates to coordinate day-to-day media relations
- Provides strategic media/issues advice and support to staff
- Provides support and interview preparation to the Division's designated media spokesperson(s)
- Provides project support to work teams responsible for the development and implementation of media strategies, including facilitating input from key stakeholders across the organization
- Coordinates various pro-active media activities, including providing support to media briefings and news conferences, and developing relevant media products
- Provides support in the development and implementation of divisional templates, tools and procedures for media releases and media relations
- Writes and develops a variety of media products, including media releases, media notes, press kits, key messages, opportunities to share information with the public about Toronto Public Health services in print, broadcast and/or web format
- Develops and coordinates a media database and maintains up-to-date media contacts lists
- Provides media training to divisional staff
- Tracks emerging issues and ensures supporting communication materials are available
- Performs media tracking
- Supports and writes internal stories for a weekly newsletter
- Liaises with City's corporate media relations and issues management team
- Collaborates with other Toronto Public Health communication team members

**Key Qualifications**:

- Baccalaureate degree in Communications, Journalism, or Public Relations, or an equivalent combination of relevant post-secondary education and considerable years of experience in a health communications field related to this position
- Considerable experience preparing and writing engaging media material that supports the goals and objectives of the organization
- Considerable experience in a Corporate Communications, Public Affairs/Relations environment in a health communications field and/or government organization handling complex, time sensitive and politically sensitive issues with a diverse complex group of stakeholders
- Considerable experience in media relations and issues management with a proven ability to monitor the media landscape and flag potential issues
- Considerable experience organizing press conferences and pitching stories to journalists
- Considerable experience with traditional and social media best practices
- Knowledge of traditional and emerging public relations and media relations practices and strategies

**You must also have**:

- Superior written, verbal and editing skills, and a proven ability to communicate at all organizational levels and with the media
- Ability to develop a variety of communication materials, including key messages, media releases, issues notes, media notes, fact sheets, backgrounders and other communication products
- Ability to influence and build collaborative relationships across a broad spectrum of stakeholders, both internal and external to the organization
- Ability to work in a high volume, high stress and politically sensitive environment
- Ability to handle sensitive and confidential information with a high degree of discretion and professionalism
- Well-developed interpersonal skills and ability to speak confidently with internal stakeholders, the public and media
- Ability to provide one-on-one support to prepare spokespeople for media interviews and/or news conferences
- Excellent organizational, time management, analytical skills and attention to detail
