CONTRACT DATES: ASAP until February 8, 2025 or the return of the incumbent

REPORT TO: Manager, Child and Youth Services

HOURLY RATE: $27.48

GENERAL DESCRIPTION: Reporting to the Manager, Child and Youth Services, the Children and Youth Programs' Coordinator-Tutoring will plan, develop and implement all aspects of the child and youth programs for participants (aged 5-24) of diverse cultures and from low-income families. Under general supervision, the incumbent will be responsible for recruiting, training and supervising program workers and volunteers. As well, the Incumbent will develop and maintain a communication strategy with staff and clients to ensure high quality social, recreational and educational programs. This position is part of CUPE LOCAL 7797. This position requires flexible hours and evening/weekend work.

MAJOR DUTIES:

- Recruit, interview, orient, train, supervise, and evaluate prospective program workers and volunteers
- Develop, plan, implement, promote and evaluate creative and cooperative social, educational and recreational activities for children and youth ages 5-24
- Assist with developing and implementing program policies and procedure and foster an environment of teamwork
- Coordinate the safety and supervision of program participants while in the program and off-site during program activities and while on outings and trips
- Maintain excellent communication and positive relations with program participants, their family members and other community agencies
- Plan and implement recognition events for program participants, volunteers and supporters
- Ensure that appropriate record keeping and data management is maintained and prepare required progress reports
- Facilitate and participate in all staff training, staff meetings and planning/evaluation session
- Assist with maintaining contact with various social service organizations within the community for the purpose of mutual referrals and networking
- Create and maintain a system for sharing information among school staff and service providers about children and youth being assisted and the services they are receiving
- Actively seek funding in collaboration with the Manager to ensure viability of the program
- Develop, implement and evaluate the Children and Youth programs to meet pre-established goals and objectives, including determining methods of operating the program
- Youth Engagement initiatives
- Other duties as assigned

REQUIREMENTS & QUALIFICATIONS:

- 2 years post-secondary education in a related field (I.e. teaching, social work, child & youth), recreation background and/or equivalent work experience
- 2 years program planning and implementation experience as a tutor, mentor, youth worker or related experience working with children ages 5-12 and/or youth ages 13-24 from diverse backgrounds
- Minimum 2 years supervisory and leadership experience with staff, students and volunteers in a community-based organization
- Demonstrated skills as an instructor and have experience in instruction and programming for children/youth in the following areas: music, drama, arts and crafts, sports, computers, baking and cooking, environmental awareness
- Experience working in a team environment with a solid understanding of child/youth development, group dynamics, behaviour management concepts and issues facing youth from diverse, low-income communities
- Commitment to anti-oppression, access and equity principles
- Some computer skills and ability to prepare reports, schedules and flyers if needed
- Must be punctual and reliable
- Knowledge of the Ontario Public School Curriculum
- Ability to speak another language would be an asset
