Executive Council works to ensure effective strategic planning and coordinated policy development and communications across government, engages Albertans and the broader global community, and promotes a vibrant and innovative public service.

In addition to policy, protocol, communications and Cabinet functions, Executive Council includes Intergovernmental Relations, which develops strategies on issues of importance to Alberta and Canada - with its partners, clients and stakeholders - to address challenges and grow opportunities. This unit also coordinates Alberta’s leadership and participation within the Canadian federation in pursuit of a federal system that best serves the needs of Albertans and Canadians.

We are seeking a dynamic leader who is excited to be at the forefront of developing strategies and building knowledge around emissions trading systems, compliance markets, voluntary carbon markets and an Article 6 strategy for the province.

As the Director, Emissions Trading and Carbon Markets, you will play a pivotal role in informing, developing, and implementing SERI strategies. This includes providing leadership in identifying trends, developing strategies, and advising executive leadership on emissions trading and compliance/voluntary carbon markets.

**Key Responsibilities**:
**1. Knowledge Building Around Carbon Markets**:

- Conduct jurisdictional scans of carbon markets to evaluate effectiveness, challenges, and lessons learned.
- Compare different emissions trading systems with Alberta's framework, identifying opportunities for improvement.
- Develop national and international strategies around voluntary carbon markets.

**2. Provide Advice and Support**:

- Lead the development of reports to enhance understanding of carbon markets within other departments.
- Offer bespoke advice and information to inform broader strategy development. Create external-facing products to support executive engagements on carbon markets.**3. Article 6 Strategy Development**:

- Lead analysis of Article 6 of the Paris Agreement, identifying barriers to international adoption/ratification.
- Advocate domestically and internationally for the adoption of Article 6.
- Collaborate with Energy and Minerals on initiatives to advance Alberta's liquified natural gas (LNG) strategy.

- Engage with Ministry executive directors, directors, and cross-ministry colleagues.
- Cultivate relationships with industry organizations and stakeholders.

- Provide mentorship, direction, and coaching to team and contract staff.
- Align unit direction, priorities, and goals with organizational plans.
- Create an inclusive and effective workplace culture.

**To be successful in this role, you will need to have**:

- The ability to develop strategy in a collaborative manner,
- Exceptional communication skills both verbal and written,
- Experience and/or working knowledge related to emissions trading systems, voluntary credit, and carbon markets; and
- Strong networking skills.
