The Energy Policy division is responsible for energy, mines, and minerals policy development and program design. It engages with a wide variety of resource development partners including various levels of government, industry, and a wide spectrum of Alberta communities and Indigenous Peoples.

The Resource Development Policy Branch leads sub-surface tenure, royalty, and regulatory policy development across Alberta’s upstream subsurface natural resources sectors. We are currently seeking a dedicated Manager of Subsurface Injection to join our team, reporting to the Director, Regulatory Systems and managing a team of analysts in our Energy Policy Division.

Subsurface injection (e.g., disposal, sequestration) in Alberta is a growing activity needed to support development. It is critical for oil and gas exploration, brine-hosted minerals exploration (e.g., lithium), geothermal resource development, and carbon capture and storage (CCS). These important opportunities underscore the need to understand the effectiveness of pore space tenure (i.e., disposal rights) and the regulatory process for disposal operations.
You will primarily lead a team that will enhance the department's understanding on the current and emerging, trends, and issues related to subsurface injection. The team will engage in thoughtful research and analysis to inform department responses to issues and recommend appropriate enhancements.

While not necessarily a technical expert, you have the ability to understand and synthesize complex themes, communicate effectively, and present observations, analysis, and recommendations. You are organized, pay close attention to detail, and possess strong leadership qualities. You can effectively facilitate collaborative discussions that drive toward solutions.

Your Key responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:

- Managing a team of analysts to provide input and recommendations relating to subsurface injection (e.g., oilfield disposal), pore space, and carbon sequestration related tenure / regulatory / and liability frameworks.
- Providing expert analysis, advice and leadership to the department and government on disposal/CCS issues and policy development related to subsurface injection, disposal, and storage. This will involve engaging with numerous internal and external stakeholders. Set goals and objectives that are supported through effective project management.
- Setting goals and objectives that are supported through effective project management.
