The Indigenous Studies program is a dynamic and growing program that is focused on Indigenous futurities, decentering colonial narratives and institutional power, and land-based learning. In the Indigenous Studies Program at Carleton University, we reshape what it means to do Indigenous research. We centre our research around the knowledge-making practices of the specific communities we work with. Through courses and hands-on experiences, our students learn about Indigenous struggles and resistances, genders and sexualities, arts and culture, and more. We challenge all our students to think about their own relationships to Indigenous peoples and lands both, domestically and within a global context.

The Indigenous Studies program plays a crucial role in transforming teaching and learning in line with the priorities identified in the Kinàmàgawin report, which provides the structure and basis for Carleton’s ongoing decolonial project. More information about the report is available at

We are currently seeking a Critical Indigenous Studies scholar with an area of interest in one or more of the following: Global Indigenous Studies; transnational and BIPOC solidarities; bodies, borders, and Critical Disability Studies; Indigenous futurity praxis; Two-Spirit and Indigiqueer Studies; Land-based learning.

About the Academic Unit

As of July 1, 2023, the Institute of Interdisciplinary Studies (IIS - will be home to three program areas: Indigenous Studies, Childhood and Youth Studies, and Human Rights and Social Justice. IIS brings together a diverse group of faculty from a wide variety of disciplinary backgrounds and scholarly interests. We are an active, dynamic community of practice that seeks to advance social justice through our teaching, scholarship, and service.

Carleton University’s Indigenous Studies program ( offers a minor and several undergraduate degrees, including an Honours Bachelor of Arts, a Combined Honours Bachelor of Arts, and a stand-alone Bachelor of Arts. Each program of study is designed to expose students to courses in Critical Indigenous Studies, with an emphasis on Indigenous futurity praxis, Global Indigenous Studies, Two-Spirit and Indigiqueer Studies, land-based learning, and Critical Disability Studies.
