Job Summary

This Research Associate position is in the research laboratory of principal investigator, Dr. Cheryl Wellington, in the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at, University of British Columbia.

Dr. Wellington’s main research focus is to establish, improve and characterize animal models of traumatic brain injury (TBI). The goal is to use such models to improve understanding of the pathophysiology, disease mechanism, and possible therapeutic targets of TBI, and how it may induce the development of neurodegenerative diseases.

The Research Associate will develop, design, implement and publish research studies related to TBI. This position requires a strong research background in animal experiments/surgeries, biomechanics, behavior studies, histology, microscopy, molecular biology, etc.

This position is located within a health-care facility. Therefore, this position requires successful verification of full vaccination against COVID-19 provided prior to the start date, as required by the provincial health mandate.

The UBC Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine is a hybrid, academically intensive Department within the UBC Faculty of Medicine whose activities span a broad spectrum of teaching, research, and academic service, often performed in the milieu of clinical practice, and are ultimately devoted to improving the care, treatment, and well-being of patients. The Department offers academic degrees at the bachelor’s (Bachelor of Medical Laboratory Science (BMLSc)) and graduate (MSc, PhD) levels with the graduate program, one of the largest in the Faculty of Medicine, which has been recognized by UBC for its quality. The Department plays a major role in the MD undergraduate program and offers an accredited residency-training program. Faculty members participate across a spectrum of research from basic investigative to translational to clinical applied research and are recognized locally, nationally and internationally for their excellence.

Organizational status

This position will report to Dr. Wellington and the Department Head.

Work Performed
- Design and implement research studies and related programs, including data analysis and interpret findings, planning, managing and handling communications for research projects;
- Prepare and publish research manuscripts in peer-reviewed journals
- Prepare scientific presentations on the progress of research programs for international conferences, reports to the funding agencies and communications to collaborators;
- Identify research synergies and create opportunities for new avenues of research;
- Lead internal and international collaborative activity and identify and build connections with new collaborators, funding and other agencies both nationally and internationally;
- Manage regulatory documentation around study approval, amendments and renewal process;
- Collect and interpret pre-clinical data which is relevant to translational research
- Contribute to optimization and further development of the CHIMERA (Close head injury model of engineered rotational acceleration)
- Mentor graduate students, organize and provide educational programs

Consequence of Error

This position requires independent judgement and consideration in making important decisions in experiments that contribute towards traumatic brain injury research.

Supervision Received

This position works independently under general direction from Dr. Wellington.

Required Qualifications

This position requires a PhD in pathology, neuroscience, or related discipline.

In addition, five years of recent, related Postdoctoral Research Fellow experience is required.

- Animal techniques (e.g. animal husbandry, animal surgeries, TBI procedures)
- Animal behavior experiments (e.g. Barnes maze, fear conditioning, Rotarod)
- Immunohistochemistry, Image analysis & quantification
- Video & motion analysis (e.g. head kinematics in 2D & 3D planes)
- Application, modification & development of pre-clinical models of TBI (e.g. CHIMERA)
