**Job Summary**: The Homes for Independence Program offers homes for independent living for youth ages 16-24. Reporting to the Manager of Phoenix Homes for Independence, the Live-in Support Worker provides a consistent presence as a positive role model while living on-site with youth. As the on-site staff for youth in a four-bedroom house, the Live-in Support Worker supports youth facilitates the household, and spends time in the home. Live-in Support Workers can have a second place of employment or attend school in addition to their live-in responsibilities.
**Compensation**: Includes free rent and utilities, $1,125.00 monthly honorarium (taxed) and opportunities for training and professional development and five days off per month. Basic furniture is provided.
**Location**: Hunter Street, Halifax, NS, (for 3 male identifying youth).
**Start Date**: As soon as possible. Some training for the position will commence prior to the move-in date.
**KEY RESPONSIBILITIES**
- Support the youth in their daily activities and provide supervision and encouragement as needed, including supporting youth with household dynamics.
- Facilitate home maintenance, including participating in distribution and completion of household chores and reporting repairs needed.
- Be familiar with and monitor the youths’ short
- and long-term goals as they work toward independent living.
- Provide some therapeutic support and crisis intervention for the youth.
- Facilitate regular house meetings and monthly house programming.
- Participate in wider cross-PHI programming and celebrations.
- Support program development, including attendance at biweekly team meetings and communication with the Phoenix Homes for Independence team.
- Complete and maintain documentation as required and ensure confidentiality is protected.
- Regularly attend youth support meetings and keep up to date case notes.
- Regularly report to the Homes for Independence Program team, including regularly scheduled team meetings.
- Occasionally liaise with other community supports, e.g., schools, doctors, social workers, etc.
- Ensure the program is congruent with Phoenix’s mission, vision, and values.
**QUALIFICATIONS**
- University or College education (can be in progress) in a related field and two years of experience working or volunteering with youth.
- A minimum of two years’ experience living independently or in a group setting.
- Skills and discretion to be an appropriate role model to youth in transition.
- Excellent organizational skills and good oral and written communication skills.
- High energy, flexible and committed to teamwork.
- Demonstrated understanding of youth development and the challenges of homelessness.
- Demonstrated skill using anti-oppressive practice (harm reduction, narrative practice, a client-directed approach, and a social justice perspective).
- Knowledge of mental health issues, substance abuse and crisis intervention.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently and with limited direct supervision.
- Registration or Candidacy for Registration, certification, or membership of a related professional body (if applicable).
