This role leads hands-on educational programs, assists visitors in their discovery of the tropical Conservatory and exhibit rooms, handles live insects and arthropods, and answers visitor questions about butterflies, plants and displays. The Nature Interpreter will work closely with the Naturalist and Conservatory Manager and will assist with a diverse assortment of Conservatory duties that reflect the immediate needs of the organization. Typical daily responsibilities of the Nature Interpreter include interacting with guests in the conservatory and animal galleries providing them with information about animals and their role in nature. In addition, the incumbent will support operations in other departments such as Admissions, Gift Store and Café as required.

**RESPONSIBILITIES**
- Greet and welcome visitors and support them in their visit of the Conservatory
- Interact with and provide educational and interpretive programming and services to visitors with information relating to insects, environment, conservation
- Assist visitors in their discovery of the tropical Conservatory and exhibits by engaging them in conversation about interesting/unique facts, identifying butterflies, insects, plants and birds in the Conservatory, and answering visitor questions about butterflies, animals, plants and displays
- Handle live insects and arthropods to engage visitors with live animal demonstrations
- Receive training to interpret the following STEM concepts: tropical ecology (flora and fauna), butterfly biology and behaviour, insect/plant interactions, and insect ecology
- Lead Conservatory and garden tours, running educational programs and leading school programs (JK to Grade 12) and summer camps
- Keep pathways, windows, surfaces, exhibits and signage clean in work and display areas
- Assist with unpacking and hanging the chrysalis shipment and hanging pupae in the emergence window as needed
- Assist with care and feeding of birds, butterflies, fish, turtles, plants and other insects/arachnids/animals as instructed by Conservatory Manager, Conservatory Supervisor
- Help to open & close the conservatory daily
- Follow the Conservatory’s CFIA protocols and assist with the pest management pitfall trap program
- Train as a frontline floater and provide coverage for Front-line staff (specifically for Admissions, Gift Store, and Café) for lunch breaks, sick days, and vacation days, as required
- Other duties to support daily operations and customer service as assigned
- Assist other departments as needed
- Adhere to all Company policies, rules, systems and procedures which are outlined in the Cambridge Butterfly Conservatory Employee Handbook, as well as all Health and Safety policies and procedures and safe work practices

**QUALIFICATIONS, REQUIREMENTS, & SKILLS**
- An interest in or pursuing post-secondary education in science and/or education (e.g. biology, ecology, entomology, conservation, early childhood education) or a related field an asset
- Interest in insects, invertebrates, and plants an asset
- Background knowledge in nature study, interpretation and education are an asset
- Willing to handle live creatures including but not limited to millipedes, cockroaches, stick insects, and caterpillars
- Adapt with changing job requirements and goals based on business needs
- Coordinate in a team environment and work with others to achieve shared goals
- Stay organized and manage time, priorities, & deadlines
- Exchange thoughts and information with colleagues and customers through a variety of forms
- Police Background Check (Criminal Record Check and Vulnerable Sector Check)

**UNIFORM**

Staff are required to wear the appropriate uniform, footwear and safety equipment at all times

**COMPENSATION & BENEFITS**

This is a full-time fixed-term position. The shifts are typically from 9 am to 5 pm on both weekdays and weekends. The rate of pay is $17.50/hour.
