Reporting to the Associate Vice President, Research & Graduate Studies, the Director, Health Sciences Library and Data Stewardship oversees the Health Sciences Library and the Data Stewardship Office of NOSM University.

As Director of the library operations, they are to ensure cost-effective management of services at the two campus libraries, as well as serving users distributed across Northern Ontario. They have responsibility to ensure the delivery of library services, the acquisition of resources that support the academic and research activities of the University, and to consider innovative strategies to improve library operations.

The Director also has responsibility for the University’s institutional data governance strategy, the warehousing of institutional data and facilitating access for internal stakeholders and researchers through the Data Stewardship Office. This includes working with a variety of university leadership, including oversight by the University Provost, in the development, implementation, monitoring and evaluation of institutional data initiatives at the University, ensuring legislative compliance, reporting for accreditation purposes, supporting the strategic plan, and generally ensuring good data governance of NOSM U’s institutional data.

The Director oversees staffing, budgets, strategic and operational priorities in addition to having responsibility for regular day-to-day operations for both the Health Sciences Library and Data Stewardship Office.

**Responsibilities**:
Tasks may include but are not limited to the following:

- Supervises the staff, manages performance expectations and deliverables, imposes disciplinary and non-disciplinary measures as deemed appropriate and ensures that appropriate training and development is provided.
- Defines responsibilities and assigns workload, demonstrating strong labour management skills and an in depth understanding of collective agreements.
- Administers complex budgets, completes administrative reports on budget targets and expenditures, and ensures compliance with all Finance policies.
- Formulates and implements strategic and operational plans in coordination with university-wide planning, and assesses and continuously improves service quality in the Units. Ensures priorities are managed with achievable goals and timelines, monitors overall progress maintaining accountability for the outcomes and reporting as required.
- Oversees the following for library operations:

- Provision of information services, including facilities management, e.g. reference services, study and learning spaces etc.
- Research and scholarly activity support services, e.g. Knowledge synthesis, literature searching, publication assistance, scholarly activity metrics etc.
- Access and coordination of collection resources and systems, e.g. licensing and acquisitions, collection maintenance etc.
- Multi-modal instructional programming, e.g. curricular programming, outreach services etc.
- Relationships with consortia, e.g. Ontario Council of University Libraries (OCUL), Canadian Research Knowledge Network (CRKN), etc.
- Ensures services and programs meet accreditation requirements and standards
- Works closely with the Advancement team to engage, cultivate, and steward donors and other supporters. Manages disbursements from endowments in accordance with donor and institutional expectations.
- Works with Facilities to manage the space planning and capital needs of the libraries.
- Oversees the following for data stewardship:

- Develop related data management policies and procedures, including chairing the data standards committee.
- Identify opportunities for the University to further leverage data and improve its economic, social, and operational positioning.
- Implement, and manage the University’s data strategy and correlating warehousing of institutional data, including visualization for the strategic plan.
- Oversee the end-to-end management of the University’s data assets (data lifecycle, information lifecycle).
- Establish controls for ensuring efficient and effective data management functions are performed and ensure compliance for access to the data by stakeholders.
- Keep informed, identify, and implement best practices in data management; assess and review the new technology opportunities related to data management, and how these will impact the University’s data management operations.
- Ensure the required accreditation data is appropriately gathered, stored, and made available for the University’s accreditation reporting activities.
- Supports the data gathering and reporting needs of the University, including support for annual reports and other external communications.
- Ensure the University can comply with provincial and/or federal reporting requirements.
- Understand and monitor the regulatory and security requirements for data, ensuring compliance and proper protection occurs.
