The Advisor, Violence Prevention, reports to the Practice Leader, Safety & Prevention, works in a matrixed human resources (HR) environment, and is accountable for coordinating, administering and evaluating the Workplace Violence Prevention Program, providing key input into the development, implementation and evaluation of new initiatives that promote safe work practices and working environments, with emphasis on violence prevention. Improves worker safety through consulting and advising management on recommendations for PHSA-wide and site-specific violence prevention initiatives. The Advisor is a skilled facilitator and delivers violence prevention training that enhances safe work practices and working conditions. Investigates incidents or other violence prevention issues and advises on hazard control measures. In addition, the Advisor leads or coordinates Violence Risk Assessments (VRA) for assigned areas, sites or programs. The Advisor, Violence Prevention provides leadership to others by providing expertise in the area of violence prevention including the development and administration of programs throughout the PHSA. This position assesses and responds to needs identified by operational partners.
The Advisor, Violence Prevention liaises with all levels of staff in the delivery of violence prevention programs and works closely with other HR staff to ensure organizational and department objectives as they relate to violence prevention. In addition, liaises with Patient Services/Program Directors and other department supervisory staff to ensure compliance with applicable legislation/regulations. Externally, the Violence Prevention Advisor liaises with other OH&S and violence prevention professionals, WorkSafeBC (WSBC), and representatives of other hospitals to establish and utilize networks to maintain a pool of resources to meet the organization’s violence prevention requirements.
**What you’ll do**
- Provides key input into the development and evaluation of violence-related policies and programs to support the achievement of Workplace Health’s and organizational area’s goals, objectives, and needs, including drafting policy documents, working with key stakeholders, recommending approaches, and implementing approved policies and programs in order to eliminate or effectively control risks as identified in the health care setting in accordance with regulations. Develops procedures based on the violence-related within approved policies and programs that meet the requirements and logistics of the applicable area of the organization.
- Provides expertise and guidance to staff and leaders regarding effective violence prevention and management techniques, coaches and mentors staff and enables development opportunities. Prevents and reduces the occurrence of violence-related incidents through consultation with key stakeholder groups and recommended prevention strategies. Engages staff, managers and senior leaders in the analysis of violence data and supports them in the development of action plans to address issues.
- Coordinates the completion of VRAs, using a prioritized list of sites, and by liaising with Workplace Consultants, Safety & Prevention and operational representatives. Monitors performance regarding compliance with the Violence Prevention program and consults with Workplace Consultants, Safety & Prevention regarding their organizational areas goals, objectives, and needs. Reviews violence reports and achievement of indicators with managers, and in areas where concerns are identified, assisting managers to develop action plans to address those issues.
- Represents organizational interests in working with regulatory agencies such as WSBC and liaises with area specific WSBC officers.
- Builds organizational capacity by participates in the provision of orientation and continuing education of staff and managers, and promotes violence awareness through on-going education and training throughout the health authority, including work site inspections and incident investigations to enable staff to safely carry out their responsibilities. Recognizes and advises management of unusual or potentially damaging conditions observed within the Authority. Maintains awareness of the trends and issues in health care, specifically violence prevention, through education, literature reviews and other means.
- Supports the development of a sustainable and integrated violence prevention program, through mentorship, education, and consultation with all levels of PHSA.
