Child and Youth Coordinator

**Position Summary**
Reporting to the Supervisor - Programs and Services, the Child and Youth Coordinator will
provide outreach and support to youth who are under supported, vulnerable and living within the
communities we serve. The Child and Youth Coordinator functions as part of a team with Family and
Community Development Coordinators, in partnership with community members, to operate the
Resource Centre and provide community development and outreach with the goal of enhancing health,
safety, social and economic capacity building in the community.
The responsibilities of this position include working with children and youth on an individual and group
basis, the Child and Youth Coordinator will provide motivation, encouragement and support to help
them develop skills to make positive changes in their lives. This may include advocacy, intervention, risk
assessments, and referrals to other professional services. Additionally, the Child and Youth Coordinator
will lead planning and facilitation of skill-based and emotional development programs with the goal of
increasing knowledge and skills around mental, physical and social health. This will also include
incorporating family programming into the overall support to children and youth.
Listed below is a summary of the qualifications and responsibilities of the position;
**Key Responsibilities and Activities**:
1. Perform outreach to and advocacy for children and youth, including the family units.
2. Plan, develop, coordinate and run a variety of child/youth programs that engage children
and youth in new adventures and experiences to assist participants to develop new skills and
increase independence and resiliency.
3. Perform in-the-moment mental health support and longer-term follow through for
participants.
4. Develop and maintain partnerships with community organizations, networks and service
providers who work with the population to promote relevant health promotion/harm
reduction education, awareness and linkages to support services.
5. Volunteer recruitment, scheduling, training and mentoring.
6. Actively participate in program evaluation.
7. Perform related administration including entering information into the database, creating and
distributing communication materials; preparing/maintaining financial reports, etc.
8. Take part in the daily activities and events of the Resource Centre.
9. Ensuring the Centre is properly maintained.
**Education and Experience**
- A university degree in a relevant discipline is preferred.
- Experience working with marginalized, vulnerable populations is required.
Program planning and implementing for children and/or youth, preferably in a non-profit/social
services setting.
- A minimum of five years’ direct experience working with children and youth is required.
- A minimum of two years’ direct experience in community development preferred.
- A minimum of two years’ experience supervising, providing leadership and evaluating the work
of other is preferred.
- An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered
**Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities**
- Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings up to 8:00pm and Saturdays; as required by
program needs.
- Demonstrated skill in amplifying young voices and promoting their needs, right’s and best
interests.
- Demonstrated in-depth knowledge of neurodiversities.
- Specialized knowledge of child development and behaviour management.
- Strong skills in interpersonal communication and conflict resolution.
- Strong knowledge of issues affecting Manitoba Housing communities.
- Demonstration of cultural competency to work effectively and respectfully with people from
different cultures and diverse backgrounds, including consideration of how social, historical
contexts and imbalance of power have impacted people’s experiences.
- Resourceful and determined in making requested programming work despite challenges such
as lack of funding, and available resources.
- Demonstrated ability to effectively work both independently and as part of a team.
- Valid Manitoba driver’s license and access to a reliable vehicle for travel within the City of
Winnipeg (shopping purposes).
