This is a 0.4 FTE part-time position with an initial appointment of 4 months and in accordance with the Trust/Research Academic Staff Agreement, has a prorated monthly salary range of $1,994 - 2,243. This position is not eligible for benefits.

**Location** - Work primarily takes place at North Campus Edmonton.

**Working for the Department of Biochemistry**

The Department of Biochemistry is a research and teaching intensive department in the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry.

**Position**

The position is to study ion transport and pH regulatory membrane proteins and involves regular lab maintenance, environmental health and safety and disposal of no longer needed lab items and chemicals. Experiments involve Biochemistry and Molecular Biology procedures included mutagenesis, knockout of protein, mammalian cell culture, gene cloning, measurement of cell growth and intracellular pH, data analysis including statistical methods. Lab maintenance involves routine making of solutions, autoclaving media, waste disposal, equipment disposal and ensuring environmental and health regulation are following. Working with and assisting undergraduate students may be required. Specialized technical tests will be required using complex lab equipment including measuring intracellular pH on transfected mammalian cell cultures using a recording spectrofluorophotometer. Data collection on experiments is required as is statistical analysis of research data and preparation digitally formatted graphs and images for publication. Assistance in cleaning, decommissioning and disposing of lab equipment and chemicals is required. Applicant should have good knowledge of computer work including operation of PC’s and Macs.

**Duties**
- Experiments in Biochemistry and lab maintenance including environmental health and safety.
- Sample preparation and various analytical procedures.
- Operation and maintenance of standard laboratory equipment including centrifuges, vacuum pumps, analytical balances and computer systems.
- Decommissioning of lab equipment and disposal of lab wastes.

**Qualifications**
- A PhD in a relevant area and experience is required
- Extensive experience with cell culture and Biochemistry and Molecular Biology.
- Experience with all aspects of laboratory maintenance and experience with data analysis and intracellular pH measurement.
- Experience in DNA manipulation, mammalian cell culture and routine biochemical techniques is required. Experience in analysis of protein expression by Western blots and quantification of protein expression is required.
- Should be familiar with all routine laboratory practices of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology.
- Should be able to read relevant scientific literature and modify work protocols.
- Should be able to organize, summarize, collate, and make figures from data.
