The Curator/Preparator
- President’s Art Collection holds overarching responsibility for the care, maintenance, and curation of the University of Regina President’s Art Collection, overseeing every aspect of its development. This role includes managing acquisitions through donations to the President’s Advisory Committee on Art (PACA) as well as procuring works for the Indigenous Art Collection. This incumbent requires a unique body of knowledge and expertise in order to fulfil the day-to-day and long-term responsibilities for the President’s Art Collection. The incumbent will establish and maintain strategic relationships with the Faculty of Media, Art, and Performance, and will cultivate and manage connections with current and prospective art donors to the University, recognizing the critical importance of fostering these relationships to enhance and expand the University’s prestigious art collection.
**What You’ll Do**:
**_Collection Management & Administration_**
- Establish protocols for acquiring and cataloging new art items, including condition reports and an electronic database (AirTable).
- Liaise with the Faculty of Media, Art, and Performance for guidance on acquisition, storage, and exhibition of works.
- Manage relationships with potential donors and coordinate integration of art gifts into the University’s collections.
- Serve on the President’s Advisory Committee on Art (PACA), preparing agendas, reports, and managing the online Campus Art Guide.
**_Collections Care and Conservation_**
- Manage the University’s storage and exhibition of works in relation to established gallery and museum standards.
- Review and manage art items that require conservation, determine type of conservation required.
- Following University of Regina Procurement policies, procure conservation and arrange for art item to be packaged, and delivered.
- Collaborate with the MacKenzie Art Gallery (MAG) on the collections they care for on our behalf.
**_Collections Review_**
- Serve on the Steering Committee and lead the Working Group for the ongoing review of the MacKenzie Art Collection at the MacKenzie Art Gallery.
- Conduct comprehensive research on each item, including acquisition history, historical and cultural significance, and compliance with regulations.
- Compile and maintain detailed reports to ensure transparency and accountability during the review process.
- Develop and present findings to the President’s Advisory Committee on Art, the University President, and the Executive Director of the MacKenzie Art Gallery, while facilitating repatriation discussions.
**_Curation & Exhibition of Collection_**
- Plan, develop, and present exhibitions of the collection while providing consultative services for item displays in campus spaces.
- Prepare and maintain art loan agreements, coordinating installation with Facilities Management and performing necessary carpentry work.
- Develop and manage standards and policies for exhibition installation, including creating signage for exhibits.
**_Indigenous Art Collection_**
- Conduct thorough research to identify potential purchases of Indigenous art that will enhance the diversity and cultural representation of the University’s collection.
- Evaluate the artistic and cultural significance of potential acquisitions in consultation with Indigenous artists, communities, and cultural experts.
- Maintain an updated list of prospective Indigenous artists and artworks that align with the University’s mission and values.
- Organize and participate in community consultations, artist talks, and cultural events to support the inclusion of Indigenous perspectives and voices in the art collection.
**_Administrative_**
- Manages the annual budget(s) for operations.
- Follows University policy on the Procurement of Goods when ordering, commissioning vendors and may involve rationalizing Sole Source Purchase for Supply Management Services
- Develops student assistant job descriptions, participate in the recruitment as needed, and provide supervision of these students.
