Reporting to the Director of Programs, the Associate Curator works collaboratively with all Gallery staff in a consultative manner to deliver dynamic, engaging, diverse, and innovative programs. The Associate Curator is knowledgeable in curatorial and administrative planning and best practices, and shares responsibility to ensure consistency of the MacKenzie Gallery program alignment with Mission and Vision, Strategic and Business plans, brand and visual identity, and how these documents are realized through all programs, visitor experience and engagement. This position must maintain exemplary relations with current and prospective donors to foster ongoing relationships in support of the Gallery. Working closely with the Executive Director and CEO, Director of Programs, Director of Development, Director of Finance and Operations and in collaboration with other Gallery staff and volunteers is also key to the success of this position.
**Accountabilities**:
- Provide input to the Director of Programs in the review and development of multi-year strategies and goals for the exhibition program, with meaningful representation from Indigenous, Black, POC, disabled, 2SLGBTQ+ and other equity deserving groups (refer to Strategic Plan for current priorities).
- Assist and provide input to the Director of Programs in the review and development of policy and procedures for the exhibition program.
- Cooperate and collaborate with other programming staff in the planning and implementation of exhibition-related programs and activities.
- Originate and organize, establish, and monitor budgets for local and national exhibitions, and associated curatorial programs.
- Develop original ideas for exhibitions involving new methods for viewing, interpreting, presenting, or understanding art.
- Research potential exhibitions by initiating contacts with artists, curators, collectors, and dealers and by keeping abreast of current literature in the field.
- Provide input on multi-year strategies and goals for the development of the Permanent Collection.
- Research and propose potential acquisitions (donations and purchases), informed by an active participation in a broader arts ecology.
- Prepare oral and written justifications for new acquisitions as assigned.
- As a member of the Program Development, Director/Curator, Curatorial, Exhibition and Program Planning Committees, and at All Staff Meetings, provide information and facilitate discussion about exhibition and collection activities, and provide input and expertise related to the general program and operation of the gallery.
- Provide advice, assistance and expertise to Community, School and Outreach Educators, Visitor Services, Administration, Fund Development and Communications staff.
- Respond to public inquiries.
- Liaise with local, regional, national, and international art communities.
- Liaise with local, regional, national, and international Indigenous communities.
**Qualifications - Education**:Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in related field
**Qualifications - Experience**:
- Four years of curatorial experience in a public art gallery or museum.
- Knowledge of art gallery and museum procedures, art handling, and environmental standards, comfortable discussing issues affecting the arts today, knowledge of art, including specialist expertise in an established area of research, with a strategic priority towards Indigenous art and artists, and comfort and experience working with artists, curators and community stakeholders;
- Experience with equity and accessibility frameworks;
- Demonstrated knowledge of exhibition production and design;
- Experience with project management and delivery in a complex, dynamic environment.
**Salary Information**: $65,476 ($33.58) - $74,403 ($38.15)
