**About Us**:
Western’s Department of Economics is a research-intensive Department and has a long-standing reputation as a leading research department in Canada. It has an international reputation for excellence in both teaching and research. The cornerstone of the Department’s educational focus is its Graduate Program. Its graduates are employed in universities throughout the world as well as in top government departments, international organizations, public and private firms. The Department offers a variety of Undergraduate Programs with many of its graduates going on to become leading economists working in the public and private sector.

**Responsibilities**:
The Financial Assistant is accountable for the implementation of daily financial transactions for the Department of Economics, in accordance with Western’s financial, payroll, procurement and funding agency (if applicable) policies, procedures and guidelines. The Financial Assistant will facilitate the administration of travel expenses, accounts payable, accounts receivable and payroll requisition functions. The Financial Assistant will also assist with budget development and financial year end processes, and will serve as a key contact for inquiries from faculty members, staff and students related to financial policies and processes. In addition, the Financial Assistant is accountable for supporting research account transactions, and for assisting with the preparation of financial statements and reports in compliance with granting agency guidelines.

**Qualifications**:

- Education:
- 2 year Community College Diploma in Business Accounting or Financial Administration with courses taken in human resources and business/office procedures required
- Bachelor’s Degree preferred
- Experience:
- 3 years’ experience in a bookkeeping, financial administration or accounting role; preferably in an academic/research setting
- Experience reconciling financial accounts, completing journal entries, processing on-line travel expense claims, preparing on-line purchase orders and invoices and preparing financial reports for various external granting agencies
- Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
- Knowledge of accounting principles and practices
- Knowledge of general office procedures and with file/record keeping processes and procedures
- Ability to ensure expenditures and resources are within allotments, and to make appropriate modifications as required
- Detail oriented with an ability to process information with high levels of accuracy
- Verbal and written communication skills to clearly express ideas in an objective manner and adapt communication style to suit the situation and the audience
- Customer service skills with a desire to achieve results in a timely manner
- Strong problem solving skills with the ability to research/investigate issues and resolve problems
- Demonstrated ability to work independently, take initiative and follow through on work assignments
- Proven ability and natural inclination to interact with people in professional, respectful and diplomatic manner
- Ability to provide guidance and support to ensure compliance with processes in a way that is positively received
- Results-oriented with an ability to handle many tasks and maintain a high level of performance
- Ability to understand and effectively communicate internal and external policies, guidelines and practices to stakeholders
- Intermediate computer skills with Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint), including spreadsheet design, word processing and database management
- Ability to work independently and effectively as a member of the team to achieve departmental results
