**Job Summary**
- The mission of Facilities Management is to provide the Dalhousie community with an inviting, safe and sustainable environment which supports and enhances an inspiring experience in learning, living, working and research. Reporting to the Director of Operations, the Central Plant Manager will oversee the operation, maintenance and repair of the Central Plant function that utilizes biomass to generate and distribute hot water to University facilities encompassing more than 700,000 square feet of indoor space, and continually generates and distributes up to 1MW of electricity to the Nova Scotia Power (NSP) distribution grid.

**Key Responsibilities**
- Oversee the Central Plant which currently includes but is not limited to one 5.4 MW biomass boiler producing heated thermal oil; one 600 bhp oil fired, hot water boiler; one 1MW Turboden Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC) generator; and one 30 hp steam boiler and reboiler.
- Supervise the plant in accordance with the Power Engineers Act of Nova Scotia and all other applicable government acts and regulations. Monitor and operate the energy management system (Rockwell Automation) to ensure the plant performs in an efficient and reliable manner.
- Analyse equipment performance records and logs to identify operating problems. Implement predictive and preventive measures. Troubleshoot operational problems and coordinate all maintenance. Prepare annual maintenance and renewal plans, and condition reports.
- Champion the Safety Program within the plant operation. Ensure safety hazard assessments are performed, and hazards mitigated prior to work commencing. Act as the primary contact for government and regulating bodies with respect to the plant._ _Oversee the plant’s hazardous waste products and their disposal.
- Manage qualified and certified Power Engineers, including scheduling staff and coordinating training. Supervise the work of specialty vendors and contractors performing maintenance and repairs/upgrades. Ensure all staff, vendors and contractors meet required safety standards.
- Manage the Central Plant operating budget. Prepare annual budget, including identifying work needing to be performed. Establish budget priorities for maintenance, repairs and renovations and monitor budgets for variances. Manage the generation and sale of electricity for revenue.

**Note**
The incumbent will be regularly exposed to saw dust, odours, noise, heights and rotating equipment risks. Wearing proper personal protective equipment while in the Plant facilities will be a daily requirement.

Due to operational requirements, the successful applicant is required to work in-person on campus.

**Required Qualifications**
- Nova Scotia Second Class Standardised Power Engineers Certificate plus seven (7) years’ experience as a qualified Power Engineer in the operation of boilers, turbines, pressure vessels, chillers, compressors, microprocessor controls, fuel storage and conveyance systems, electrostatic precipitators, and all other auxiliary equipment.
- Experience managing and directing a large boiler plant.
- Experience in the areas of health & safety, energy management and loss control and well versed in all aspects of applicable industry standards acts & regulations.
- Strong interpersonal and communication (verbal and written) skills as well as previous supervisory experience
- Excellent problem-solving, analytical and organizational skills.
