Toronto, Canada United Steelworkers Full time

The United Steelworkers Union is seeking a smart, energetic staff person to join the Communications and Political Action Department for an 18-month term, working out of the Canadian National Office in Toronto.

This contract position replaces a full-time staff person during a parental leave, as of July 17, 2023.

Duties include:

- Developing original social media strategies and digital content, including social media and online advertising.
- Finding new ways to re-purpose existing content, including videos and photography.
- Maintaining a calendar of content for use across social media platforms and multiple accounts.
- Preparing online materials as needed for an international, national, district or local audience
- Ensuring written and designed materials follow USW brand guidelines.
- Assisting with training of local union representatives, staff and support staff and creating and updating instructional materials, as needed.
- Developing materials for new campaigns to support collective bargaining, member mobilization, political efforts and more.
- Managing the texting program through Mobile Commons, including training for district staff and local unions.
- Taking photos for social media at events.
- Developing strong, principled messaging to be used online by USW and USW leaders and activists.
- Assisting at International, national and District (regional) events.
- Other duties as assigned.
- Some travel will be required.

**Qualifications**:

- High level of organization and the ability to plan and execute activities.
- A proven track record of successful social media campaigns and initiatives.
- The ability to troubleshoot with various content management systems and CRMs, along with assisting and training other staff on the website.
- Strong writing skills, including excellent grammar and spelling.
- Graphic design and layout skills using Adobe Creative Suite programs (InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator).
- Proficiency with and understanding of how to strategically use social media including Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Instagram and others to advance the work of and promote the union, as well as engage its activists in meaningful ways.
- Experience with website design and management, including use of various Content Management Systems (CMS).
- Experience with/interest in online and social media activism and strategy for activist organizations a plus using CRMs (Action Network)
- Basic knowledge of, or experience with, still photo and video cameras and formats. Audio and computer file formats a plus.
- Creativity and a keen eye for detail.
- A high level of self-motivation, commitment and dedication.
- The ability to work in a team environment while being self-motivated.
- Experience in training others in how to use social media or other communications tools.
- Knowledge of labour unions and/or progressive social issues.
- Bilingual (English & French) is an asset
- Training or experience using video editing software (Premier) is an asset.

**Job Type**: Fixed term contract
Contract length: 18 months

**Salary**: $83,388.13-$102,991.72 per year
