Job Summary

UBC has joined other jurisdictions in declaring a climate change emergency, emphasizing the urgency in reducing GHG emissions in order to mitigate human contributions to global climate change, as well as the importance of developing adaptation strategies to improve the resiliency of our communities. Through the Campus as a Living Lab (CLL) initiative, UBC enables frameworks for collaboration, applied research and piloting of innovations that responds to urgent global sustainability challenges.

The Urban Innovation Research program of the UBC Sustainability Hub works under the CLL umbrella to help advance sustainability-related applied research and innovation pilot, build interdisciplinary collaborations across the university and with local and regional partners, and enable knowledge exchange and mobilization to scale impacts beyond the university. The Sustainability Hub was recently awarded a grant from Environment and Climate Change Canada for a two-year project,
_Pathways to Net-Zero Embodied Carbon in Buildings: barriers and solutions to effective policies and actions_. The project will identify existing barriers and challenges to reducing embodied carbon emission in building materials, and develop a series of applied research project to pilot potential solutions. Work will be done in collaboration with academic research and regional and national partners in government, industry and non-profit sectors, and will emphasize learning and knowledge mobilization to inform changes in policies and practices.

Organizational Status

The Embodied Carbon Project Coordinator reports to the Director, Urban Innovation Research in the UBC Sustainability Hub and works closely with the CLL Research Manager as well as other staff, faculty, students and partners as required.

Work Performed

o Coordinates the activities outlines in the project grant workplan related to em bodied carbon emissions policies, practices and research:

- Development of academic literature and policy reviews, including reviewing for accuracy and completeness.
- Networking and interviews with academic researchers and regional industry and government representatives working on embodied carbon.
- Scoping of applied research and pilot projects, working with the Director, partners and other staff.
- Development and initiation of applied research and pilot projects, monitoring of project progress and facilitation of communications among project teams, working with the Director, partners

and other staff.
- Data collection and analysis from the projects to assess solutions, working with the project teams and other staff.
- Knowledge mobilization through reports, case studies, presentations, and other media and events.

o Conducts or coordinates background research on embodied carbon and life cycle assessment in support of the pilots and overall projects.

o Recruits, trains and supervises students project assistants supporting the above activities.

o Writes technical documents and reports, independently and in collaboration with other staff, researchers and external partners, and coordinates stakeholder reviews and approvals.

o Presents on the project and learning from the activities to audiences from academia, industry and government.

o Coordinates the creation and maintenance of project information resource libraries, for use in current and future research.

o Works with the Director on the development and implementation of the overall project workplan, financial management and reporting for Environment and Climate Change Canada.

o Supports the Urban Innovation Research team in development of new living lab programs, projects and initiatives,
