**ABOUT THE ROLE**

The Cook, Community Meals & Food Services, is responsible for supporting the kitchen management team in providing a high quality of food service and experience to our internal and external programs. The Cook will focus on key areas of the business including but not limited to meal preparation and service, food and supply storage, kitchen operations, workstation cleanliness and maintenance.

**Duties and Responsibilities**:
**Ambassadorship**
- Model the values of Bissell Centre and communicate these principles in a clear and compelling fashion both internally and externally. Translate agency values into Food Services culture and everyday activities to foster a welcoming and engaging working environment.
- Mission focused and driven to provide services and food security for our community participants.

**Kitchen Operations, Customer Service and Maintenance**
- Adhere to daily and weekly cleaning checklists.
- Ensure the walk-in refrigerator, walk-in freezer, chest freezers and fridges are clean and organized daily.
- Responsible for supporting the execution of daily menu plans and preparation of nutritious meals and snacks served to community participants and other programs.
- Meal preparation and service is to be conducted in strict compliance with Alberta Public Health and all other applicable legislation.
- Responsible for execution of food service requests for special events that may sometimes fall on statutory holidays or weekends (appropriate compensation for working statutory holidays is determined as per Alberta Labor Law and Bissell Centre internal policies).
- Ensure high quality and consistency of food preparation and presentation.
- Responsible for a clean workstation and the minimization of wastage.
- Responding positively and in a timely manner to all internal and external food service requests.
- Responsible for food service to participants and maintenance after each completed service.
- Communicate with the Head Chef to maintain the high level of food quality that is expected through available resources.
- Communicate any issues to the Head Chef which could affect meal service before the service is provided.
- Ensure food is prepared as per Health Canada’s Food Guide and evaluate food quality and preparedness by tasting.
- Ensure food stuffs are stored at appropriate temperatures for the correct length of time and that guidelines are followed as per Alberta Health Services and the Public Health Inspector.
- Set up, break down and maintenance of workstations and kitchen opening/closing procedures.
- Communicate with the Head Chef regarding inventory of food ingredients, paper supplies, and chemicals required for production in advance so that they are ordered and delivered on time.
- Report safety hazards discovered in the workplace to the Head Chef immediately and take preventative actions where possible.
- Ensure that all donated food items are labelled and dated accurately and systematically rotated for expiration dates.
- Responsible for supporting the daily procurement process as directed and selecting appropriate ingredients for use in meal preparation and service.
- Show empathy and the ability to communicate with and support individuals experiencing mental health, addictions, chronic illness, houselessness, poverty, and related challenges. Able to respond appropriately to intense situations, provide conflict resolution and work directly with individuals with barriers.

**General and Administrative**
- Support agency policies and procedures, including reporting of staff concerns, safety issues and critical incidents.
- Participate in probationary and annual performance evaluations.
- Attend scheduled staff meetings, training sessions and performance check-ins.
- Participate in routine morning team rallies with kitchen staff prior to operating business hours.
