Hiring requirement: This particular posting is open to those who identify as part of Indigenous Communities with interest in the Assistant, Indigenous Culture Conservation role.
Two years contract
**Duties and Responsibilities**
Under the supervision of the Indigenous Cultures Curator, the Assistant, Indigenous Culture Conservation is responsible for collaborating on research, acquisition and dissemination projects related to the Indigenous culture collection.
**Main Tasks**
**Connecting Communities**
- Nurture and strengthen relationships with various Indigenous communities.
- Enhance the dissemination of Indigenous communities’ ancestral knowledge and expertise by facilitating access to the collection, particularly for people living outside Montreal.
- Plan, accompany and document visits or consultation sessions with Indigenous groups.
- Develop vital partnerships with various community stakeholders to leverage their knowledge by combining it with the contemporary knowledge of museum professionals.
- Participate in meetings of the Indigenous Advisory Committee whose primary focus is to take an informed, cross-disciplinary look at the Museum’s Indigenization initiatives and provide recommendations.
**Research Work**
- Act proactively and identify cultural property and associated communities in the Indigenous Cultures collection with significant potential for repatriation.
- Prepare answers to requests for information on the Indigenous Cultures collection received by the Curator and the Reference Archivist at the Archives and Documentation Center.
- Conduct research and create documentation about objects in the collection and their provenance, enabling researchers, the public and Indigenous communities in particular to learn about the past and culture of First Nations.
- Collaborate in the verification of cataloguing of objects in the Indigenous Cultures collection for exhibition projects and loan requests.
- Collaborate in standardizing the "Culture" and "Geocultural area" fields of the online collection.
- Assist all curators and their team and take advantage of opportunities to explore various collections.
- Help develop a repatriation policy (literature review, benchmarking, research other institutions’ policies, laws, specific cases, etc.).
- Help strengthen the Museum’s position and its work to implement the United Nations Declaration of the Rights of Indigenous Peoples and the calls to action of the TRC and the National Inquiry into MMIWG.
- Contribute to assessing donations and communicating with potential donors.
**Collaboration on Exhibitions**
- Revise the content of texts and labels for Indigenous-themed exhibitions, including _Indigenous Voices of Today_.
- Work on the content of family tours in exhibitions with Indigenous themes, and the permanent exhibition, _Indigenous Voices of Today._
- Support artists for artist-in-residence exhibition projects, especially for the Museum’s partnership with the Contemporary Native Art Biennial.
- Get involved in an upcoming exhibition and participate actively in all its phases, including possibly the publication of an exhibition catalogue.
**Educational and Community Programming**
- Contribute to the development of programming around the permanent exhibition, _Indigenous Voices of Today,_ Indigenous culture exhibitions and theme days/festivals (Truth and Reconciliation Day/Indigenous History Month, etc.).
- Participate in outreach for the Museum’s programs, exhibitions and activities surrounding the Indigenous Cultures collection.

**Qualifications and Profile**
- Master’s degree or equivalent in a field related to the collection (Ingenious Studies, History, Anthropology) or in Museum Studies, or in the process of obtaining a doctoral degree or equivalent combination of education and experience
- Knowledge of the French language to be able to work in a Francophone institution (training available) and proficiency in spoken and written English
- Knowledge in MS Office/Teams software suite, and knowledge of TMS is an asset
- A good understanding of the challenges around reconciliation, decolonisation, and Indigenous cultures within museum institution
