**The Role**

The purpose of this position is to provide unbiased, family mediation support for Métis children, youth and families in the child welfare system who are also interacting (or may be at risk of interacting) with the justice system in Ontario. The _Family Mediation Court Worker_ (referred to hereafter as _the Worker_) will provide system navigation guidance and support to families at various and critical junctures in their journey; these include: preventative support, preparation support, court support and post-sentencing and planning support.
- Addressing the need for preventative support by:

- Increasing the knowledge base for Métis Family Wellbeing staff and community partners (including Children’s Aid Societies and Indigenous Child Wellbeing Agencies);
- Increasing / establishing the knowledge base of Métis and families and building resilience;
- Addressing the need for preparation support by:

- Increasing the knowledge base of Métis families about court proceedings / expectations;
- Identifying complementary supports / services that may be utilized by families preparing for court proceedings;
- Obtaining necessary information from community partners to promoted informed family preparations;
- Addressing the need for court support by:

- Increasing the knowledge base of judges;
- Increasing the safety and comfort of families who are participating in court proceedings;
- Decreasing barriers to legal support; and,
- Addressing the need for Post-sentencing and planning support by:

- Supporting families understand post-court requirements and conditions, set goals, make informed decisions and prevent recidivism.
- The Ontario Child, Youth & Family Services Act (CYFSA); more specifically, the FNIM specific content and regulations;
- The Ontario, Indigenous Child & Youth Strategy (OICYS);
- Ontario’s Child Welfare Re-Design Plan; and,
- Knowledge of the Child and Family Services Review Board (CFSRB) and other relevant processes.

The purpose of including these criteria is to build the capacity of MNO’s existing program staff - most notably the Métis Family Wellbeing team who are at the frontlines with respect to service provision for families who are involved with the child welfare system. While their backgrounds are primarily in the field of social work; they continue to receive requests for support specific to justice system navigation. The Family Mediation Worker will be an asset to the team and a much needed support to build on MNO’s existing tool box for Métis Child, Youth & Family services provision.

This is a determinate contract position with committed funding until March 31st 2024; there is a possibility of extension (pursuant to funding).

**Duties include, but are not limited to**:

- **Knowledge of the Ontario Child, Youth & Family Services Act (CYFSA);** more specifically, the FNIM content and regulations;
- Strong desire to act in the service of the Métis Citizens, to advance and uphold rights and culture;
- Completion of post-secondary education in the areas of social work, law, social sciences, humanities or equivalent combination of education and experience;
- Knowledge of Métis-specific and broader indigenous specific policies and key challenges as related to the Ontario Child Welfare system;
- A high degree of technology literacy and proficiency in standard office equipment and _Zoom / Microsoft Teams_ software;
- Advanced communications skills, both written and verbal;
- Strong research and analytical skills;
- Strong project management skills, including the design and implementation of project work-plans;
- Superior conflict resolution, organization and administrative skills;
- Highly detail-oriented;
- Demonstrated ability to manage competing demands and assess changing priorities;
- Demonstrated ability to assess situations and problem-solve independently; and,
- Demonstrated ability to work alone/independently with mínimal supervision. and;
- Willingness to travel (safe, COVID-19 considerations or exemptions will be made as required).
