**Indigenous Combined (Criminal/Family) Court Worker**

**JOB SUMMARY**

**QUALIFICATIONS**
- Post-secondary diploma from college or university in a justice related field or demonstrated equivalent experience
- Demonstrated experience supporting Indigenous community in criminal/family courts
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team
- Ability to coordinate support to direct service users through developing a knowledge of services available through both Indigenous and main-stream providers
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
- Demonstrated knowledge of the Criminal Justice System, Family court system and Gladue Principles
- Knowledge of Indigenous history and culture
- Valid class "G "Drivers License and own reliable vehicle
- CPIC and vulnerable sector clearance

**RESPONSIBILITIES**

Attend first appearance criminal court, family courts including child protection courts (including virtual apprearances).

Liaise with Duty Counsel, Defense counsel, Crown Attorney and Judiciary.

Ensure that direct service user understands the charge(s)/matters before the court and they understand their rights and responsibilities in relation to these matters.

Explain to direct service users and their families (with consent) the nature and meaning of any sanctions/conditions/requirements taken against or applied to the direct service user by the courts and any other processes that arise because of contact with the justice system.

Assist with the preparation of Gladue-like reports, Plans of Care, Affidavits, Case Conferences, Mediation and Motions

Liaise with BNFC staff to provide additional support services for direct service users

Work with BNFC Justice Programs (Indigenous Criminal Court Worker, Restorative Justice Program, Indigenous Bail Supervision Program, Indigenous Peer Coordinator Program, and Victim Support Program) to obtain information on common clients (i.e. wrap-around case management as needed).

Maintain regular communication with other community agencies. Ensure that documented printed resource materials are available to agencies and provide option for in-person/virtual training opportunities.

Keep statistical records and case notes of all contacts made with the clients and other agencies on their behalf.

Support other BNFC Justice Team members as required and participate in Justice Team meetings and planning sessions.
