**About us**

For 50 years Nellie’s has been providing shelter and support for marginalized women and their children in the Greater Toronto Area. We operate programs and services, for women and their children who had or are experiencing violence, poverty, and homelessness. Nellie’s works to lessen homeless for women and their children whether the cause is family violence, mental health, or any other reason that results in dealing with the impact from trauma.

Our core operations involve our 38-bed emergency shelter for women and their children who are homeless or escaping violent situations. In addition to our shelter, Nellie’s operates Community Support and Outreach programs that provides after care support and follow-up services to women and their children after they leave the shelter, as well as transitional housing support for women and gender diverse people living in the community who are homeless or at-risk of becoming homeless.

Nellie’s is currently looking to hire a Permanent Full-Time Shelter Housing Worker in our Shelter Program. The main function of this role is to provide housing resources and support to clients in shelter who are fleeing violence or homelessness; at risk and don’t qualify for SPP housing.

**JOB SUMMARY/DESCRIPTION**

**Support Women to Find and Maintain Housing**
- Develop an updated list of appropriate alternative housing resources
- Develop and maintain network of relevant contacts in the housing sector
- Provide appropriate, timely information to women regarding housing alternatives

**Advocacy**
- Assist clients with forms and documentation that needs to be completed
- Keep current with changing laws and trends as they relate to family, criminal, immigration issues and the _Residential Tenancies Act, 2006_ as amended
- Arrange for cultural interpreters for all appointments as needed
- Support women in eviction prevention
- Support women in attending tribunal hearings

**Maintenance of Participants Management System**
- Develop and maintain participant’s database, files and records required by Funders
- Track and analyze data
- Report on and analyze trends in the program
- Prepare monthly program reports
- Work with management team to identify and prepare funding proposal
- Maintain up-to date client records, ensuring confidentiality and compliance with relevant policies and regulations
- Participate in regular staff meetings and case conferences to discuss client progress, share insights, and collaborate on effective support strategies

**Assist Women to Establish a Network of Support in the Shelter**
- Develop and maintains community partnerships
- Develop, maintain and update information or relevant resources in the communities where housing is available
- Advocate on behalf of women
- Coordinate referrals for services and supports to outside agencies
- Maintain regular contact either in person or by phone with relevant services
- Outreach and network to organizations in the above mentioned list
- Escort women into her new community
- Support women to access appropriated resources in her new community
- Provide transitional support upon and after discharge from shelter

**Community Education**
- Represents the agency within the community and with partners, stakeholders and other constituents
- Builds relationships and linkages with housing support communities
- Liaises with agencies involved with client
- Attends regular Alternative Housing Meetings

**Team Building**
- Contributes to organization team building process
- Participates in case conference meetings to review women’s goals, outstanding needs and develop case plans, identify expected outcomes
- Consults and coordinates client process with other appropriate staff
- Works independently and also as part of a larger team to identify client needs and assist the client in accessing appropriate programs and services

**QUALIFICATIONS**:

- Minimum of BSW or equivalent; with a designation of College of Social Service & Social Work
- 2 or more years demonstrated success in planning, coordinating, and evaluating programs
- Knowledgeable on _Residential Tenancies Act, 2006_
- Experience in and commitment to working within and anti-oppression framework
- Experience in the social service sector, ideally in an agency, delivering counseling, crisis intervention or advocacy services
- Able to work occasional nights and weekends
- Consistently demonstrates reliable professionalism in working in, out and across the organization.
