**Overview**:
**Position Summary**:
The Community Financial Worker is responsible for providing financial empowerment services, including, explaining tax filing benefits and requirements, supporting financial literacy, conducting free tax filing and helping connect persons to access government benefits and community supports. The Financial Empowerment and Tax Help Program serves persons living on a low to modest income in Hamilton.
The Community Financial Worker will primarily work with individuals to prepare income tax files; provide
education on tax filing services and available government benefits; and help individuals problem solve
immediate financial concerns. In addition, the Community Financial Worker will provide community referrals where needed.
**Responsibilities**:
- Provide confidential income tax preparation for a Hamilton residents living on a low income
- Provide one-to-one information and problem-solving support to diverse low-income people
regarding their financial matters, at SPRC locations and in partner settings;
- Deliver public education on financial issues, including public workshops;
- Routinely utilize a database to collect statistics and document daily work
- Work with the FEPS team and other staff and partners to problem-solve and provide additional
supports to diverse participants as needed;
- Work with partners in the delivery and continued development of FEPS programming;
- Acquire and maintain up-to-date, detailed knowledge of financial issues and financial services
affecting low-income earners including self-employed as well as people on social assistance and
other marginalized groups;
- Work with the FEPS team and other staff and partners to problem-solve and provide additional
supports to participants as needed;
**Qualifications**:
- Experience preparing multiple tax files for persons in diverse situations, for
example filing for new immigrants, refugees, persons on OW and ODSP and seniors
- Experience using income tax return programs such as Profile, Ufile or others
- Registered with Canada Revenue Agency’s Community Volunteer Income Tax Program or
otherwise qualified.
- Knowledge of financial matters affecting diverse low-income populations;
- Experience providing one-to-one supports, demonstrating good assessment and problem-solving
skills, solid communication and interpersonal skills, good judgement, and clear understanding of the
importance of confidentiality;
- Familiarity with community social services and resources available to persons living on a low to modest income
- Demonstrated understanding of anti-racism and anti-oppression concepts and practices and
commitment to continued learning and reflection;
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills;
- Strong computer skills (e.g. Excel, Word, Teams, Zoom, Ufile etc.);
- Ability to work well in a team and independently;
- Commitment to an empowerment approach to build the capacity of diverse individuals,
groups and communities;
- Able to work some evenings and weekends if required
- Ability to speak a language other than English is an asset;
**Physical Requirements**
- Must be able to lift 25 lbs
- Must be able to do computer work for significant periods of time
