General Counsel

Reporting to the Executive Director and working alongside the Support Services Team, the General Counsel will provide legal opinions, options and recommendations regarding education, labour/employment law, human rights, collective bargaining, administrative, privacy, contract and regulatory/professional discipline law, provide representation or legal services to Associates, write legal pleadings or letters, determine legal strategies, negotiating with Board Counsel on behalf of the Associate, represent Associates on select LTD matters, liaise with investigators, composes legal submissions, preliminary objections, and/or legal pleadings related to Associate Fitness to Practice and/or Disciplinary Hearings, support the efforts of the Support Services Team representing Members and Practising Associates, engage in defending Principals and Vice-Principals in professional discipline proceedings at the Ontario College of Teachers and assist them in responding to other legal proceedings related to the performance of their employment duties.

**Requirements**:

- L.L.B./J.D. and member in good standing with LSO
- Minimum of 8 years’ experience in the areas of education, administration, and labour/employment law
- Minimum of 3 years’ experience of in-house legal counsel and/or litigation

**Knowledge**:

- Advanced knowledge of the Education Act and other legislation such as the Employment Standards Act, Occupational Health and Safety Act, and the Human Rights Code.
- Knowledge of education law, labour/employment, human rights, collective bargaining, administrative, privacy, contract and regulatory/professional discipline law.
- Proficient knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Access).

**Skills and Abilities**:

- Excellent leadership and management skills.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication (written & verbal) skills.
- Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Strong advocacy, negotiation, and dispute resolution skills.
- Ability to create and present professional learning programs.
- Excellent time management and organizational skills with the ability to multi-task.

**Major Roles and Responsibilities**:

- Provides advice and consultation to the Support Services Advisors with respect to legal questions, avenues, or options available for Associates.
- Provides legal opinion, options and recommendations regarding education, labour/employment law, human rights, collective bargaining, administrative, privacy, contract and regulatory/professional discipline law.
- Reviews, interpret and assist with local Terms & Conditions (employment contracts)
- Provides summary governance and Roberts’ rules of order advice.
- Ensures compliance and/or legal updates for policies.
- Prepares and delivers legal training and/or presentations.

**Work Environment**:

- Ability to work flexible hours as required; and
- Able to travel occasionally as required.

**Salary Range**: $150,000 - $160,000 along with competitive benefit package
