The Ministry of Attorney General, as represented by the Attorney General, is the legal advisor to the government of British Columbia and is charged with ensuring that the administration of public affairs is carried out in accordance with the law. Legal Services Branch (LSB) supports the Attorney General in fulfilling this mandate by serving as legal advisor to government in civil law matters. LSB provides legal advice to government and ensures that legal risks associated with government operations are reduced. LSB assists all ministries of the government, Cabinet and certain public bodies.

The Central Services Group within the Legal Services Branch is seeking to fill one full-time permanent Legal Counsel level 2 or level 3 position to join our commercial and technology practice group. This key practice area represents LSB in the planning, negotiating and drafting of service and technology contracts, including in the rapidly expanding digital environment.

Our practice includes strategic planning, solution analysis and problem solving with business area clients, product teams and the risk management branch. Our goal is to support alignment of digital products and services with the direction of a digital, modern government while in maintaining compliance with the government’s Digital Code of Practice, Core Policy and Procedures Manual and applicable laws.

Our counsel work closely with all government ministries and central agencies to support and assist ministries to increase accountability and clarify expectations when acquiring digital services, to take care of information and data and to manage risks proportionately.

**Job Requirements**:

- Must be a member of the Law Society of British Columbia in good standing OR immediately eligible for call to the Law Society of British Columbia with solicitor experience corresponding to one of the following years of call:

- Legal Counsel Level 2: From 6th to 11th year of call.
- Legal Counsel Level 3: More than 12 years of call.
- Must have a minimum of 6 years of recent experience practicing contracts law.

Preference may be given to applicants with one or more of the following:

- Experience drafting custom contracts to suit the client’s business needs and desired outcomes
- Experience drafting, managing and/or negotiating outcomes-based contracts, contracts with complex relationship governance, labour considerations, economic models, and performance incentives
- Experience advising on privacy and security matters in relation to technology services or use in British Columbia
- Experience or training in use of the VESTED methodology
- Experience advising in the area of procurement in British Columbia
- Experience advising in relation to British Columbia government or crown transactions or contracting
- Experience ascertaining client business objectives
- Experience providing solution focused legal services

Interpersonal skills and the ability to work independently and as part of a team are essential. You must have excellent organizational skills and the ability to manage files with competing priorities and deadlines.
