Temporary Recreation Coordinator

Reporting to the Director of Senior Services, the Recreation Coordinator, will temporarily cover a parental leave and is responsible for the planning and implementation of resident's recreation programs across our two long term dementia care sites (Brentwood House and Sluggett House). Each site is home to 16 seniors with varying capabilities and interests. The Coordinator is responsible for establishing resident activation and engagement programs based on the physical, social, emotional, intellectual, spiritual and cultural needs of the residents in each location. The Recreation Coordinator also trains and supports care staff to carry out recreation activities in accordance with licensing requirements.
**DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES**:
- Following the Resident Care and Personal Service Plan, develop, schedule, organize and implement a calendar of weekly and monthly recreation and social events that can be adapted to individual residents
- Coordinate recreational activities across both sites (Brentwood House, Sluggett House) Onsite support required 2 days a week (1 day at Brentwood House, 1 day at Sluggett)
- Offsite support maybe required for SHOAL and Parry Place. Occasional onsite support may be required to cover vacation time or assist with events
- Organize and implement resident recreation programs outside of the facility, ensuring the safety and well-being of the residents
- Share recreation and social calendar with residents' families and ask for suggestions on ways they would like to participate.
- Encourage resident participation in activities while respecting their autonomy
- Lead residents in daily living and recreation activities when on site if required
- Maintain activity tracking sheet for care aides and greeters to ensure licensing requirements are met
- Train and support care staff to carry out recreation activities that follow licensing requirements
- Resource, train, coordinate, schedule, and support volunteers while collaborating with the volunteer services team.
- Support care staff and cover recreation for sick call ins and vacation time if possible when onsite
- Maintain positive relationships with team members, residents, and visitors.
- Adhere to budget for recreation related purchases
- Develop fundraising opportunities to enhance programming
- Organize and maintain recreation supplies, materials and equipment
- Attend staff training/ information sessions/ meetings as required
- Manage subscription services
- Observe residents and report unsafe conditions and noticeable behavioral, physical and/or cognitive changes to the Manager
- Adhere to all Infection Control and provincially ordered safety guidelines
- Develop and maintain relationships within the community to foster and leverage community interactions with residents
- Other recreation tasks while onsite in collaboration with the Manager
**EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE**:
- Diploma in recreation Programming or similar education
- A minimum of 2 years of experience developing, planning and providing activation, recreational and/or social activities for seniors
- Experience and training in working with a dementia population is a definite asset.
- An understanding of how to use recreational activities to improve residents' physical, emotional, and mental health.
- First Aid Certification
- Valid Class 5 Driver's License
- Access to reliable transportation

- Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to build rapport and maintain positive relationships with residents and their families
- Ability to participate in physical activities and assist residents with mobility challenges.
- Physical ability to carry out all duties of the position.

- Strong leadership skills and the ability to teach and motivate volunteers and care staff
