Job Summary
The primary work for this Research Assistant / Technician Level 4 will be to develop, organize, schedule and perform complex recovery surgical procedures in mice. This requires a high degree of skill and expertise. Experience in primary tissue sample collection and processing, molecular biology techniques will be an asset, with opportunities to learn new skills in the team. Supervising and assisting junior research assistants and students in the laboratory when required. The salary and job grade will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
Organizational Status
Reports directly to the principal investigator, Dr. Fabio Rossi. Oversees and manages workload assignments for junior technical staff and students of the laboratory.
Work Performed
- Design, development and documentation of standard operating procedures following biosafety standards and protocols. Development and writing novel protocols and safety procedures.
- Work as the intermediary between the Rossi Lab and the UBC veterinary and Animal Care Services teams, collaborate with animal care and review
- General animal husbandry and handling, subcutaneous, intraperitoneal and intramuscular bolus deliveries, saphenous vein and tail vein injections and blood sampling
- Recovery surgical procedures in mice, such as establishing parabiotic mouse pairs, coronary artery ligation and thoracic artery constriction to observe myocardial remodeling in transgenic animals, implantation of osmotic pumps for drug deliver, femoral artery ligation to induce ischemic damage
- Development of new surgical protocols and adapting published protocols to meet UBC ACS requirements
- Post-surgical follow-up and care of animals, including collaborative management of possible out-of-hours responsibilities to follow stringent timelines when providing care for experimental animals
- Mouse colony maintenance and co-operation with team members to facilitate stock management
- Tissue harvesting, paraffin embedding and cryopreservation, histological staining, immunofluorescence assaying of samples
- Acquisition and analysis of primary cell populations by enzyme digestion, flow cytometry and fluorescence microscopy
- Performing molecular biology techniques: DNA, RNA and protein extractions, recombinant DNA work, PCR, qRT-PCR, Western blotting, immunoprecipitation and ELISA
- Assisting team members with data analysis and preparation for scientific presentations and manuscript writing; assisting with grant writing
- Attending and presenting data in scientific meetings and conferences
- Ordering, receiving and stocking reagents
- Maintaining required scientific equipment in working order and troubleshooting problems with complex equipment.
Consequence of Error/Judgement
Decisions made in this position are crucial to the operation of the laboratory. Any errors made could jeopardize the experiments performed, damage the reputation of the laboratory and may also cease existing grant funding.
Supervision Received
Works mostly independently under minimum supervision by Principal Investigator, Dr. Fabio Rossi, specifically for issues that deviate from established policy and procedure.

The incumbent will be responsible for supervising and training new members of the team, including junior technical staff and new students.
Minimum Qualifications
Completion of a university degree in a relevant discipline or technical program and a minimum four years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Some positions may require a graduate degree.
