**POSITION FUNCTION**
Coordinate and participate in the work of the Arboriculture work unit. Provide direction to employees and implement work programs/goals, provide technical support to Supervisor.

**KEY DUTIES**
Coordinate, assign, review and participate in the work of approximately 9 FTE involved in arboriculture with a flexible and collaborative approach. Ensure schedules, procedures and established performance and safety standards are met, provide employee training and input to performance appraisals, complete timesheets. Provide excellent and efficient service to both internal and external customers in keeping with the City of Victoria's service principles. Collaborate in a team environment to deliver work programs.

Assist in the development and implementation of arboricultural maintenance programs in accordance with current professional industry standards; assist monitoring expenditures. Provide technical expertise to identify, monitor and make recommendations on control of pests and diseases impacting Urban Forests.

Conduct site inspections at various locations to review work progress and quality. Make recommendations on the selection, maintenance and reactionary work related to the urban forest. Review plans to confirm that the location of utilities and services have been marked out of flagged. Assess problems involving tree maintenance and tree hazards, perform tree risk assessments and evaluate removal requests; respond to and assess storm damaged trees; maintain a variety of manual and computerized records such as tree inventory and equipment or other resource records. Coordinate seasonal work programs such as tree planting, stump grinding, watering and/or young tree maintenance.

Operate tools and equipment associated with arboriculture including aerial trucks, chippers, chainsaws, handsaws, ropes, harnesses, lanyards and stump grinders. Perform wide variety of urban forestry tasks including pruning, rigging, cabling and felling, in a safe manner. Occasionally perform tree climbing activities to undertake required tree work. Actively seek to identify and solve problems quickly with effective solutions.

Respond to inquiries and complaints from the public and other departments. Attend and participate in operations meetings when required, with other sections, departments or agencies on matters related to the continued efficient operations of the Division. Support the implementation of the Tree Protection Bylaw.

Perform related duties where qualified.

**INDEPENDENCE**
Work is performed according to assignment or seasonal schedule and is reviewed while in progress. Issues such as tree removal are discussed with supervisor.

**WORKING CONDITIONS**

Work in awkward positions with arms unsupported while pruning or planting. (frequent)

**KEY SKILLS AND ABILITIES**
Organize and prioritize the work of assigned work crews.
Knowledge of Tree Protection Bylaws.
Use hand tools and power equipment.
Knowledge of ropes and knots; ability to safely climb trees.
Read and interpret engineering drawings, landscape drawings, blueprints, utility information sheets and grade sheets.
Basic level knowledge of current City software programs and related specialty software.
Maintain accurate records.
Supervise small staff groups (up to 9 FTE).
Establish and maintain effective working relationships.
Deal effectively with the public and outside agencies.
Work safely on job sites and participate in safety programs.
Ability to perform aerial rescues.

**QUALIFICATIONS**
**Formal Education, Training and Occupational Certification**:
High School graduation.
Technical School Diploma in Arboriculture, Horticulture or a related field (2 years) or related Trades Certification. (4 years)
Current and valid International Society of Arboriculture Arborist Certification.
Tree Risk Assessment Qualification (TRAQ).
Pesticide applicator’s license. (40 hours)
Current and valid Class 5 BC Driver’s License with air endorsement.
**Experience**:
3 years of related experience including supervisory experience
or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

**OTHER**:
May be requested to substitute in a more senior position.

**Work schedule: Monday - Friday, 40 hour work week**
**$42.30 per hour, Pay Grade 12**
