This is specialized environmental work in identifying and controlling medical-veterinary pests of nuisance and disease-carrying importance. An incumbent of this class provides information, assistance and advice to internal and external contacts; inspects private and public land for the presence of pests; identifies pest species using detailed identification keys and implements prevention and control programs; maps and records inspected areas and maintains related records; participates in conducting experiments and writes scientific reports. The incumbent makes independent decisions based on sound pest management practices referring more difficult or policy matters to a superior. Duties are performed under the general supervision of a superior who evaluates work on the basis of conformance with established pest management strategies and effectiveness of services provided.

**Some of the key responsibilities of this position include but are not limited to**:

- Responds to concerns regarding pests on public and private land; provides pest management information, advice and suggestions for prevention and control programs to a variety of internal and external contacts
- Identifies pest, mosquito (larvae and adult mosquitoes) and other insect species by using detailed identification keys and the microscope; collects dead crows to test for West Nile virus
- Monitors possible mosquito breeding sites and determines the proper control and/or prevention methods to be used; sets carbon dioxide mosquito traps in selected areas and monitors mosquito counts; maps all areas being monitored.
- Monitors pests on public land; locates potential future problem areas; assesses most effective means for control and prevention; sets traps; evaluates various pesticides, determines the most appropriate one to use and applies pesticides, as required
- Bachelor of Science in biological science or related field and a minimum of two years’ experience in vector control, environmental assessment or pest control
- Valid Class 5 driver’s license for the Province of B.C. and use of a properly insured vehicle for the performance of duties
- Structural - Integrated Pest Management Certificate
- Mosquito and Biting Fly Certificate
- Pesticide Dispenser Certificate for B.C.
