**Recreation Technician - Pontoon Program**

**8 week Summer Position**

**Job Purpose**

Reporting to the Children’s Services Officer, this position is responsible for planning, scheduling and budgeting boating excursions for Starlight children and their families, as well as taking on First Mate responsibilities during these outings. This position involves remote computer work, as well as in person boat days, done out of Starport Marina.

**Major Duties/Responsibilities**

**Boating days**:

- Planning both long-term (monthly) and short-term (re-scheduling due to inclement weather, illness or unforeseen circumstances)
- Maintaining a master list to keep staff and board members informed of ongoing boating activities
- Preparing budgets for outings and following up once the activities are completed
- Assist in the planning of boating weekends
- Open / Close of the boat (wipe down all surfaces and life jackets, take the canvas on and off, etc.)
- Event closeout (updating spreadsheet and database and contacting families for feedback, post-excursion)

**First mate responsibilities**:

- Assisting the Captain with technical and safety responsibilities for the boat
- Interacting with Starlight children and their families during the excursions
- Arriving at least 30 minutes before the passengers to prepare for the outings
- Ensuring the boat is always adequately fueled
- Ensuring all required safety equipment is on board and in good working order
- Creating a fun atmosphere for the Starlight children and their families on board by interacting with them through music and games
- Other duties as assigned

**Requirements/Qualifications**
- Must have a high school diploma
- Boating license an asset but not required
- First aid/CPR an asset but not required
- Must have basic boating skills
- Must be comfortable in all weather conditions
- Must be a good swimmer and comfortable around water
- Must be comfortable around sick and/or disabled children
- Must be available to work weekends and possibly some evenings
- Successful completion of criminal and vulnerable sector background check

Pay: $20.00 per hour

Expected hours: 35 per week
