**JOB SUMMARY**:

- The Archaeology & Environmental Monitor is responsible for both participating in and monitoring archaeological and environmental work within Tsleil-Waututh Nation consultation area.

**ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS**:

- The Archaeology and Environmental Monitor works alongside archaeology consultants and environmental consultants to monitor and participate in archaeology and environmental fieldwork.
- Act as eyes and ears of TWN to ensure cultural and environmental resources are honored and protected.
- Participate in all aspects of archaeological and environmental fieldwork, as required.
- Report relevant information to TWN Archaeology & Environmental Liaison, and/or TWN Archaeology & Cultural Heritage Program Manager.
- Monitor archaeological fieldwork, including excavation (all ground-disturbing activities).
- Participate in archaeological fieldwork (shovel/auger testing, hand excavation, surveying, screening, raking, shoveling.)
- Inspect areas for signs of artifacts or cultural materials.
- Monitor environmental fieldwork (such as habitat assessment, sediment fences, in-stream works)
- Work alongside non-TWN Archaeology and Environmental Consultants.
- Take daily notes and fill out timesheets and expense forms.
- Assist with washing and cataloguing artifacts when required.
- Perform other duties as required.

**WORKING CONDITIONS**:
**Physical Demands**
- Field work in variable weather
- Works near/with potentially dangerous machinery near open excavation units
- Repetitive actions, such as lifting, bending, raking, shoveling, and sediment screening.

**Mental Focus**
- Ability to remain calm, professional, objective, and constructive.
- Must model adherence to established systems and processes.

**Environmental Conditions**
- Outdoor working conditions in variable weather.
- Highly sensitive legal, confidential and political issues and environment.
- Communication with outside consultants, managers, and other First Nations.
- Occasional fieldwork outside normal office hours.
- Ability to work in a team environment.

**QUALIFICATIONS**:

- Archaeological Training for this position will be provided. Ability to recognize intact or stratified cultural deposits and artifacts. And familiarity with basic archaeological terminology is an asset
- Environmental Monitoring Training for this position will be provided. Familiarity with local plants and fish is an asset
- Enjoy being outside
- Ability to establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with other fieldwork staff
- Good communication skills and motivated with a positive attitude
- Physically fit (hiking, standing, long pedestrian surveys, moving equipment)
- Ability to maintain focus during repetitive working conditions
- Reliable and punctual
- Willing to travel throughout Lower Mainland area
- Willing to undergo project specific safety training and able to take direction
- Adherence to health and safety regulations and site safety instructions
- Ability to accurately report work activities on timesheet with project codes
- Possess a valid First Aid Certificate or be willing to obtain within a set timeframe
- Willingness to learn and ability to take direction from more than one supervisor
- Ability to work in a team environment
- Self-motivated, attentive to detail, able to work independently and efficiently
- Demonstrate flexibility and cooperation
- Must successfully pass a Criminal Record Check
