**Position**:
Under the direction of the Program Coordinator for the Walpole Island Community Service Program for the Walpole Island First Nation, the Parental Support Worker will enhance healthy family relationships and support community development by providing parenting education and support services in both group and individual settings. The family is the core unit of the community, healthy families make healthy communities. The Parental Support Worker will also assist clients/families in understanding and addressing substance abuse issues and their effects on the family by providing supportive counselling, intervention, referral, and after-care services. The Parental Support Worker will function within the framework of the Walpole Island First Nation philosophy, policies, and regulations.

**Requirements**:
A. SKILLS:

- Ability to set priorities, organize workload, and workspace.
- Self-motivated.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Computer literate.
- Demonstrated counselling and empathy skills.
- Valid Ontario Driver's License and reliable transportation.\

B. EXPERIENCE:

- Minimum 2 years’ experience in a counselling setting in mental health, addictions, or social service field.
- Experience working with Native community.
- Experience working with adults and families.

C. EDUCATION:

- Post-secondary diploma in addictions, mental health, or social service field.
- Training in substance abuse counselling if the applicant does not possess a relevant diploma.

D. KNOWLEDGE:

- Understanding of the physical, social, psychological, spiritual, and environmental factors influencing individuals, families, and communities in the areas of mental health and addictions.
- Aboriginal cultural knowledge and/ or practices, an asset.

**MUST HAVE AT LEAST TWO YEARS OF ABSTENTION FROM ALCOHOL AND/OR NON-MEDICAL DRUG USE**

**Responsibilities**:
**MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES & PERFORMANCE REQUIREMENTS**:

- Understand the role/function of the Community Based Wellness Supports Program and the Community Service Program to provide input in determining priorities for the client, families, and community wellness.
- To establish and maintain a networking system with other related agencies and services, both on Walpole Island First Nation and off-reserve in order to promote the program, work in cooperation, and promote a coordinated holistic service/ treatment/ rehabilitative plan addressing the needs of the client(s) and family(ies).
- Actively participate in fulfilling the mandate of the Community Based Wellness Supports Program and the Community Service Program.
- Facilitate and deliver Community Based Wellness Supports programming within both individual and group settings and focus on parenting education and family support services.
- Interview clients individually and/ or within families to assess their needs and determine the services required.
- Assist client through the continuum of care: assessments, service planning, supportive counselling, support services and advocacy, referrals, and ongoing support services, including crisis intervention, as appropriate.
- Incorporate cultural knowledge/practices and land-based activities into programming, as a means of introduction to aboriginal wellness, as appropriate.
- Make appropriate referrals to beneficial programs and services available to meet the needs of the client and/ or the client's family.
- Provide a link between clients and culturally appropriate services whenever possible and appropriate, to enhance a client's wellness and spiritual path.
- Maintain confidentiality of staff, clients, groups, and community.
- Maintain case records in accordance with program requirements, including screening, assessment, progress and case notes, and electronic systems.
- Ensure adequate safeguards are in place to ensure the health and safety, and security of program clients.
- Develop, adhere to, and evaluate a viable, reasonable, and practical work schedule.
- Participate in professional development activities, including training, self-care inventory, and yearly performance and job appraisal with supervisor.
- Prepare and submit monthly activity reports to the supervisor and provide information necessary for the preparation of reports and other community information events.
- Participate in program evaluations, including data management statistical reporting, and other pertinent information.
- To perform other related duties as directed by the supervisor.
