**Summary**:
Reporting to Manager of Financial Planning, the Budget Planning & Analysis Student is responsible for assisting the Budget Office Team in the Financial Management Services Department in developing and analyzing budgets, conducting financial forecasts, and supporting fiscal decision-making processes. This co-op opportunity provides an excellent learning experience for students pursuing a career in finance, accounting, or public administration within a municipal setting.

**Duties and Responsibilities**:

- Budget Development: Collaborate with the Budget Office Team and City Departments to gather data, review financial performance reports, and support the preparation of the annual municipal budget. Assist in forecasting revenues and expenditures to ensure alignment with the City’s strategic goals.
- Budget Maintenance: Create and maintain account structures in the budget system in coordination with accounting team. Assist with in-year budget transfer process to ensure integrity and transparency of the budget.
- Financial Analysis: Ensure journal entries, account reconciliations, and analyses are completed in a timely fashion. Conduct financial analysis to identify trends, patterns, and potential areas of improvement in the City’s financial performance. Present findings in a clear and concise manner, supporting decision-making by Senior Leadership Team.
- Data Management: Assist in maintaining financial databases, spreadsheets, and other relevant records to ensure accurate and up-to-date financial information is readily accessible for budget planning and analysis purposes.
- Cost-Benefit Analysis: Participate in cost-benefit analysis for proposed projects, programs, and initiatives to evaluate their financial viability and potential impact on the City's budget.
- Budget Monitoring: Collaborate with the Budget Office Team to monitor budget implementation, track expenditures, and report on budget variance. Identify potential budgetary risks and recommend appropriate corrective actions.
- Process Improvement: Propose and participate in initiatives to enhance budgeting and financial analysis processes, streamlining workflows, and increasing efficiency.
- Compliance: Ensure adherence to City financial policies, regulations, and reporting requirements. Support the preparation of financial reports for internal and external stakeholders.
- Cross-Functional Collaboration: Engage with various departments and stakeholders to understand their budgetary needs, provide financial insights, and foster collaboration in the budget planning process.
- Professional Development: Take advantage of opportunities to learn about municipal finance, governance, and administration, acquiring valuable skills and knowledge for future career growth.
- Provide support and data gathering and analysis for special projects and initiatives.
- Performing all other job-related tasks or special projects as directed.

**Position Requirements**:

- Enrollment in a relevant undergraduate or graduate program in finance, accounting, public administration, or a related field.
- Strong analytical skills and proficiency in financial analysis techniques and tools.
- Excellent attention to detail and ability to work with large sets of financial data.
- Proficient in using spreadsheet software (e.g., Microsoft Excel) and financial management systems.
- Effective communication skills, both written and verbal, to convey complex financial information clearly.
- Proactive and self-motivated, with a strong desire to learn and contribute to the team's success.
- Knowledge of municipal finance principles and budgeting processes is advantageous but not mandatory.

**Hourly Rate**:$25.93

**Expected Work Location**: City Hall

**Hours of Work**: Currently Monday - Friday; 8:30am - 4:30pm

**THIS IS A TEMPORARY POSITION FOR APPROXIMATELY FOUR (4) TO TWELVE (12) MONTHS**
