JOB SUMMARY

The Indigenous Academic Advisor, is responsible for developing, delivering, and assessing academic advising services, programs and projects for the Faculties of Science (FoS) in order to strengthen the recruitment, admission, academic success, personal development and retention of all undergraduate Science students with a focus on Indigenous students. The incumbent also manages science engagement programs, community outreach and career preparation initiatives. The incumbent will collect, analyze and report on data for multiple purposes.

This position focuses on increasing the number of qualified Indigenous students and addresses their needs, as well as to strengthen connections and develop external partnerships with the indigenous communities of British Columbia. The First Nations House of Learning (FNHL) and Enrolment Services serve as a key partner. This position works collaboratively with many broad campus partners and participates on campus-wide committees. The incumbent requires flexibility and tact, a high level of independence and collaboration skills, as well as superb organizational and time management skills.

The incumbent is responsible for the success of students with regard to academics, extra-curricular activities, career development and overall health and well-being. The position contributes directly to the development of policy and priorities of the Faculty in alignment with the Faculty’s strategic plan and with the UBC Indigenous Strategic Plan. ORGANIZATIONAL STATUS

The Indigenous Academic Advisor, reports to the Assistant Dean, Student Academic Services in Faculty of Science (FoS). The incumbent's day-to-day activities are integrated into the Science Academic Advising office. The incumbent works in close collaboration with Associate Deans, faculty members and Academic Advising and Student Engagement staff, and with other centrally-based and faculty-based Indigenous student service professionals. In addition to interacting with current and prospective students in FoS, the incumbent works externally with high schools and Indigenous communities and organizations.

WORK PERFORMED

Primary responsibilities fall within five major areas: (1) Academic Advising; (2) Student Engagement (3) Admissions; (4) Recruitment; (5) Community Engagement; and (6) Strategic Initiatives.

Academic Advising

As an Academic Advisor, the incumbent develops, coordinates and implements educational services geared to achieving, maintaining or improving student success, retention, and well-being in both faculties, including guiding students through decisions around degree and career planning and discovery.
- Advises all students in FoS, with a focus on Indigenous students, including guidance and advice on complex degree requirements and specialization admission criteria. Guides students in developing a holistic view of their academic and career goals to ensure a balanced approach to academic, social, professional, community and other obligations and demands. Works closely with individual students to ensure access to appropriate resources (e.g., tutoring, counselling, financial, band funding, etc.) to promote academic success.
- Develops, implements, and evaluates programs and services to encourage Indigenous students' academic success and learning experiences, such as peer mentoring and tutoring programs for continuing Indigenous students. Works to foster a healthy and supportive student community of Indigenous students in FOS. Liaises with FNHL, Enrolment Services and other Faculty partners in the delivery of these services. Develops and presents at academic workshops, public information sessions, and special events.
