The Health Promoter - Environmental implements and evaluates initiatives promoting healthy environmental conditions within Riverdale and the broader community. In order to do this the Health Promoter
- Environmental will use a combination of research about environmental issues affecting urban dwellers (e.g. air quality, access to green space, safe transportation), an equity-based and environmental racism/environmental justice approach which identifies specific impacts on the most vulnerable populations (e.g. apartment dwellers, low-income populations, newcomers, BIPOC/racialized communities), along with community energy - what is most pressing for locals in their words/experience (surveys, research, elected reps).

This position is expected to work onsite during the COVID-19 pandemic as required.

**Responsibilities**:

- Research and monitor the effects of the physical environment (natural and man-made, including soil, air, water, and land use) on the health of the Riverdale community
- Communicate the effects of pollutants on human health using community education approaches
- Maintain information resources on environmental issues for the community and SRCHC staff
- Organize in-services for SRCHC staff to integrate environmental concerns in their practice
- Works within SRCHC to support waste reduction, sustainable transport, toxics reduction and procurement across the organization
- Collaborate across the CHC sector to support initiatives relevant to CHCs and climate change
- Take an equity-based and environmental racism/environmental justice approach which identifies specific impacts on the most vulnerable populations (e.g., apartment dwellers, low-income populations, newcomers, BIPOC/racialized communities)
- Assist in maintaining an integrated health promotion program by participating in planning and implementing outreach activities for SRCHC’s priority groups
- Collaborate within own team and other teams across the organization to identify and provide health education to target groups
- Facilitate community action on specific environmental health issues impacting the health of the priority groups
- Liaise with local and external environmental networks as they relate to the Riverdale Community
- Encourage volunteer participation and guide their involvement in environmental health promotion activities
- Advocate to reduce the impact of pollution on human health in collaboration with community groups and members
- As directed, organize community advocacy efforts
- Keep SRCHC management and Board informed of current and potential advocacy concerns regarding Environmental Health issues in the community
- Conduct systematic ongoing evaluation of all environmental health initiatives
- Prepare reports and statistics as required
- Participate in health promotion policy development and advocacy within SRCHC and the community level
- Other duties as necessary

**Qualifications**:

- Post graduate degree from a recognized university in Environmental Sciences, health or a related discipline or a combination of an undergraduate degree and significant experience
- 1 - 3 years’ experience in a community organization working in a related field
- Experience and knowledge of environmental health issues, climate change, sustainable transportation, toxics reduction, research techniques, program design and evaluation
- Understanding of concepts of health promotion, social prescribing and social marketing
- Understanding of equity-based and environmental racism/environmental justice approaches which identify specific environmental impacts on vulnerable populations
- Experience in community organizing, with excellent communication (both verbal and written) and group facilitation skills
- Familiarity with Health Impact Assessments and Health Equity Impact Assessments considered an asset
- Written and verbal knowledge of a second language (Cantonese/Mandarin) considered an asset
- Police clearance documentation will be required for employment
