Reporting to the Manager Allied Health, the Recreational Therapist will be responsible for assessment, treatment, education, and recreational participation that facilitates patients′ achievement of optimal health and promotion of the highest quality of function.

The successful candidate will develop innovative group therapies, and will be responsible for implementing the therapeutic recreation service delivery model. In partnership with the patient the therapist will design individualized therapies that promote a holistic leisure lifestyle and patient-centered goals within the interdisciplinary plan of client care.

Requirements:

• Bachelor of Arts degree in Therapeutic Recreation from a recognized University, or health-related
Undergraduate degree and post graduate certificate in Therapeutic Recreation.
• Member of a recognized Therapeutic Recreation Association preferred.
• Valid BLS - CPR training
• Familiar with various Recreation and Leisure modalities: sensory stimulation, music as therapy, horticulture therapy, adapted sports/hobbies, rehabilitative recreation, etc.
• Encourages patient independence in Recreation Program and ensures that recreational goals are in harmony with therapeutic goals of other services.
• Actively participates in discharge planning and community integration.
• Skills in assessment of individual and group needs of persons with cognitive impairment.
• G.P.A. and P.I.E.C.E.S training and/or certification is an asset
• Evidence of sound organizational, prioritization and critical thinking skills
• Provides appropriate clinical feedback and education to patients and their caregivers.
• Develops rehabilitative interventions/ programming which aims to improve patients′ overall function including, but not limited to: monthly or weekly program calendar and/or events newsletter, collaborative programming with other consultative services (i.e., Spiritual Care).
• Delivers group therapy as the lead facilitator following a prescribed program with a commitment to patient-centred goal setting or as co-lead/part of interprofessional team (i.e., with OT, BSO nurse, etc.)
• Participates in the supervision/training of Volunteers and/or Recreational Therapy students consistent with the commitment of the hospital to community inclusion and the provision of student education.
• Reviews health records for information pertinent to patient treatment.
• Documents patient progress toward meeting established goals as stated in the treatment plan.
• Effectively utilizes the Clinical Information System (CIS) for clinical documentation and accurately records workload measurement statistics in CIS.
• Adheres to evidence-based practices, policies and standards for Patient Safety and improvement of the patient experience. These include communication and teamwork, infection prevention and control, and safe use of equipment and facilities.
• Maintains accurate financial records consistent with petty cash and reimbursement policies, and makes purchases of supplies within a set budget.
• Able to function as an integral component of an interdisciplinary team.
• Demonstrated excellent interpersonal skills including skills in patient teaching.
• Experience working with people of various ethno-cultural groups is an asset.
• Demonstrated physical fitness to perform the essential duties of the position.
• Demonstrated pattern of good attendance and work record
• Experience working with geriatric populations is an asset.
