The Indigenous Child and Family Well-being worker position is part of the Restorative Practice Team, which is dedicated to building and maintaining family support networks for children and youth who are separated or at risk of being disconnected from their home, traditional communities and culture. This authorized position ensures that the spiritual, physical, emotional and mental well-being of Indigenous children, youth and families remains healthy and strong by exploring and nurturing crucial family and community networks meant to last a lifetime.

**GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES**:
***Indigenous Child and Family Well-being Worker will:

- have lived experience and in-depth knowledge of the history, policies, culture and demographics of Canada’s Indigenous communities.
- Seek to improve outcomes for our children and youth by encouraging decision making and planning with parents and caregivers who are unable to provide immediate care while on their journeys of healing and recovery.
- Assist in re-establishing important bonds, especially with those who are willing to provide permanent, meaningful relationships for children and youth in our care or in need of alternative care placements.
- Work closely with family, bands and Indigenous communities by building upon existing family or adult supports that youth have identified as important or significant to them.
- In accordance with the worker’s assigned role as established in the agency’s current service model to provide case management and support, facilitation, prevention and intervention services in accordance with the Child, Youth & Family Services Act, Ministry regulations, directives, standards, and Agency policy and procedures. This may include investigation, assessment, family intervention and facilitation services to families in the community and/or to children in care and their birth families and/or alternative caregivers.
- Provide services to support families in the community or children in care with a focus on and their birth families and alternative caregivers concentrating on services to facilitate family and relationship networks that will ensure children’s safety and promote children’s well-being, and maintaining, establishing and building supportive lifelong relationships. Services will be provided in compliance with the Child, Youth & Family Services Act, Ministry regulations, directives, standards, and Agency policy and procedures.
- Facilitate, develop, implement, and review indigenous service plans for family cases and developed by family networks and other service providers.
- Workers offer culture-based approaches to services. They must demonstrate an awareness of a large range of needs pertaining to intergenerational trauma, mental wellness, age, gender, substance(s) of use and abuse, to co-morbidity issues, language and culture, and must be able to provide sensitive responses to these needs.
- Indigenous wellness and support worker will work collaboratively with partners to improve access to high quality services for First Nations, Inuit and Métis. Our vision is to support and empower Indigenous peoples to independently deliver services and address the socio-economic conditions in their communities.

**DUTIES PERFORMED BY THE INDIGENOUS CHILD AND FAMILY WELL-BEING WORKER ON A REGULAR BASIS**:

- Ensure the program eligibility criteria are met.
- Develop and maintain relationships with community Knowledge Keepers and Elders and indigenous communities.
- Track and discuss issues specific to Indigenous communities and provide education/ connection to mainstream staff regarding Indigenous peoples
- Assist service users in establishing a network of support in the community.
- Conduct interviews with a referred child’s parent(s), caregiver, relatives and where/if possible the child him/her/their self to assist in identifying potential kin.
- Implement Heart and Spirit commitments and customary care agreements.
- Help alleviate barriers for First Nations, Metis and Inuit peoples through protective services
- Initiate contact with people in order to provide and collect the information required.
