**MARINE CAPTAIN**
**POSITION OVERVIEW**

The Marine Captain is primarily responsible for the operation of the PortsToronto tugboat Iron Guppy and may include
other vessels. This position supports the dredging operation and ice breaking for PortsToronto. The Captain
demonstrates professionalism and leadership and will ensure the safety of crew and members of the public.

The position of Marine Captain is a working supervisor position. Above and beyond the supervisory duties, the Captain is
expected to take part in daily chores, training, maintenance, and any other duties assigned to the crew.

**Note: *This is a Union represented position belonging to CUPE Local 46*
**DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES**:
Reporting to the Business Unit Director, or designated representative, the general duties and functions include but are
- not limited to:

- Maintaining harmonious operations and relations of the vessel with respect to crew and customer relations.
- Ensuring vessel is in proper operational condition.
- Maintaining the vessels in a clean and tidy manner paying particular attention to proper housekeeping
- conditions.
- Reporting all equipment malfunctions, and/or incidents involving passengers, to management as quickly as

possible.
- Maintaining daily and weekly checklists and ships logs as assigned.
- Must comply with all PortsToronto policies and procedures including Health and Safety policies, SOPs,

procedures, and legislated requirements, as well as being familiar with the regulations of the Ship Safety Branch
of Transport Canada.
- Perform Airport Ferry cover-off as required.
- Primary Tug Captain for winter ice management operations.
- Must wear designated safety equipment/PPE as required.
- Other duties as assigned by PortsToronto.

**ABILITIES & QUALIFICATIONS**:

- As this is a Safety Sensitive position, must have the ability to pass a “fitness for duty” medical examination.
- Must be mechanically inclined and have the ability to maintain and run diesel engines, pumps, compressors, etc.
- on the vessels.
- Must have good communication skills
- Must, as a minimum, possess a Master Near Coastal 50 Tons Domestic Certificate or equivalent, and must
- possess and maintain a Transport Canada Discharge Book.
- Must obtain a Marine Emergency Duties Certificate and undergo Marine Medical Examination.
- Must possess and maintain up-to-date Temporary Engineer’s Certificates for all PortsToronto vessels.
- Must possess and maintain an up-to-date Continued Proficiency Certificate.
- Must possess a Marine Radio Operator’s Certificate.
- Must possess a recognized Marine First Aid Certificate.
- Must have experience in ship and small vessel (i.e. tug boats, etc.) handling.

**CONDITIONS**:

- Criminal record check will be conducted on hire
- Annual Driver’s License validity check, as applicable.
- Flexibility to work extended hours or weekends, as the need arises

**HOURS OF WORK**:7.5 hours per day between the hours of 7:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. 5 days per week. Evening, weekend
and holiday shifts may be required.***

**COMPENSATION**: $48.7/hour
