**MARINE MATE RELIEF**
**Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport (BBTCA)**

**POSITION OVERVIEW**

The Marine Mate (Relief) participates in the daily operation of the PortsToronto ferries providing access to and from
Billy Bishop Airport. The Relief Mate facilitates the loading and unloading of ferry passengers, reporting any operational
issues to the Captain and the general upkeep of the vessel.

The Relief Marine Mate demonstrates professionalism and dedication to ensure a safe and efficient ferry service and a
positive customer experience.

**DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES**:
General activities and functions include, but are not limited to:
Handling the public in a tactful and courteous manner.

The safe and efficient operation of docking, vehicle stowage, and passenger control.

Taking control of the Ferry during the absence of the Captain as required.

Assisting in the operation and checking of the engines on the PortsToronto’s ferries.

Maintaining the ferries in a clean and tidy manner paying particular attention to proper housekeeping conditions.

Reporting all equipment malfunctions, and/or incidents involving passengers, to the on-duty Captain as quickly as
possible.

Maintaining daily and weekly checklists as assigned.

Following safety rules as laid down by PortsToronto, as well as being familiar with the regulations of the Ship Safety
Branch of the Transport Canada.

Other duties as assigned by the PortsToronto.

**ABILITIES AND QUALIFICATIONS**:
As a minimum, be certified as a Master, Limited for a Vessel 60 Gross Tonnage or more.

Possess and maintain an up-to-date SeaFarer’s Medical Certificate.

Possess and maintain an up-to-date certificate of Marine Emergency Duties Level “D” training.

Possess and maintain an up-to-date Temporary Engineer’s Certificate.

Possess and maintain an up-to-date Continued Proficiency Certificate.

Possess and maintain an up-to-date ROC M Radio Certificate.

Must be able to read, write and speak English fluently.

Must have a minimum of two years’ experience as a Mate or Master on ferries. Tug experience an asset.

Must be mechanically inclined and have the ability to maintain and run diesel engines, pumps, compressors, etc. on
the ferries.

Must be physically fit, with emphasis on eyesight, hearing, and nerves.

Must be able to swim.

Possess a valid Marine Basic or Advanced First Aid Certificate

Must be able to work rotating shifts.

Must comply with all PortsToronto policies and procedures including Health and Safety policies, SOPs, procedures,
and legislated requirements

Must wear designated safety equipment/PPE as required.

including Drug and Alcohol Testing for Safety Sensitive Positions.

**SPECIAL CONDITIONS**:
Criminal record check will be conducted on hire***

Flexibility to work extended hours, as the need arises**
**HOURS OF WORK**: Rotational shifts on a relief basis between the hours of 5:00 a.m. and 12:30 a.m., including weekends

and holidays.

**COMPENSATION**: $41.30/hour
