**The Role**:
This role is ideal for those looking for an opportunity to make a difference in the community while at the same time maintaining a work-life balance. The Mobile surgical unit provides spay/neuter access to care for Edmonton and area residents.
The Mobile surgical unit provides access to care for Edmonton and area residents who qualify under the low-income guideline set out by the Government of Alberta as well as supports the Trap, Neuter Release initiatives in the surrounding areas of Edmonton. The Registered Veterinary Technologists' on-board responsibilities include patient flow, premedication, surgical preparation, anesthesia monitoring, and surgical recovery period as well as client counseling to ensure optimal patient care. The Mobile Unit season will run 3 days per week from April 30 to Aug 1.
**Key Roles & Responsibilities**:
This position is responsible for a variety of functions as follows:
**Intake of patients**
- Informing the owner/caretaker of procedures and risks involved to obtain informed consent for surgery, vaccination, microchip, and/or parasite medication.
- Document the animal’s correct weight and place the animal in a cage with identification documents on the front of the cage.
- Assist the veterinarian in performing a physical exam before surgery.
- Preparation of medication for each patient after intake; including injectable pre-medication/anesthesia, analgesia injectable and oral; vaccines, and microchip.
**Surgical Duties**
- Assist with pre-medication of patients and prepare patients for surgery.
- Assist with monitoring patients during anesthesia and during recovery.
- Assist with clean-up, including washing gross debris from surgical instruments/surgical packs, cleaning surfaces, cages, and floor, and returning all equipment and supplies to the correct area for storage.
- Assist with data entry using Shelter software.
- Assist with patient discharge.
**Education & Requirements**:
