Coordinator, Aboriginal Student Services Centre

The Aboriginal Student Services Centre (ASSC) staff offer a wide range of services in the areas of recruitment, liaison, admissions advocacy, academic advising, and registration. The ASSC provides support that fosters resilience in students and assists in their academic success, and is committed to on and off campus community outreach.
The **Coordinator, Aboriginal Student Services Centre is a full-time term** position responsible for managing the Centre and ensuring that Indigenous students experience a positive transition to the University setting. They will respond to any inquires and provide students with comprehensive support and guidance as it relates to degree planning and advising.
**Responsibilities**:
- Responsible for coordinating the ASSC, including hiring, supervising and training of staff, allocating work assignments, developing and implementing modifications in procedures, and recommending changes to enhance student service delivery.
- Ensures objectives for recruitment, transition, and retention of Indigenous students are achieved.
- In consultation with the Registrar, develops and manages the ASSC budget.
- Works with other staff and students to organize annual Pow Wow.
- Provides guidance and support regarding cultural/traditional teachings and activities.
- Responsible for ensuring and maintaining a safe, respectful, and welcoming environment for staff and students.
- Coordinates specialized programs, projects, operations or events.
- Works collaboratively to ensure effective working relationships and smooth student experience across ASSC and other Student Services areas.
- Provides academic and career advising on both an individual basis and in groups to undergraduate students using a developmental advising model.
- Supports and guides students in planning and decision making related to educational and career goals.
- Provides 1st year advising support to Transition Year Program (TYP) students.
- Provides interpretation of and clarification on university policies, procedures, regulations and terminology.
- Refers students to other UWinnipeg services, community services, upgrading options, and other resources as part of the assessment process.
- Assists with the WebAdvisor course registration process.
- Provides explanations of course and graduation requirements.
- Advises on the formal appeals processes available to students.
- Researches, prepares and presents individual student appeals for the Senate Sub-committee on appeals. Participates in the discussion and decision-making process on the Senate Sub-committee
- Collaborates on development of strategic marketing and content.
- Implements creative problem-solving strategies when working with potential and current students
- Oversees the Elder in Residence Program.
- Provides personalized attention and arranges support services for all Indigenous students, and refers students to other University departments and services based on assessment of need.
- Ensures that ASSC staff facilitate the tutoring program.
- Ensures that ASSC staff are engaged in the ongoing development and implementation of programs and services relating to the needs of Indigenous students.
- Oversees informal activities/functions with other University departments, agencies, Indigenous organizations and community groups, develops and maintains effective working relationships.
- Provides information sessions which promote an understanding of Indigenous student issues.
- Works closely with Indigenous Education Authorities, advocating on behalf of students for funding and sponsorship.
- Oversees invitations to organizations to conduct presentations regarding employment and volunteer opportunities for students.
- Builds relationships with Indigenous Organizations, government, businesses, and community organizations.
- Works with other ASSC staff to ensure group advising/registration sessions are organized and conducted for rural and northern schools/groups.
- Researches resources which may benefit Indigenous students
- Liaises with the Winnipeg Education Centre, Bachelor of Education Program and other programs to facilitate ACCESS Programs
- Coordinates the University Preparation Program (UPP) by developing and managing the day-to-day operations, book orders and finances of the program.
**Qualifications**:
- Undergraduate degree, preferably from the University of Winnipeg
- Minimum of 5 years of directly related work experience.
- Excellent oral/written communication and presentation skills.
- Strong management skills in mentoring, leading and supporting highly competent and seasoned personnel.
- Must have a firm general knowledge of all facets of the University of Winnipeg, including all academic programs.
